Is it tube driven? I was having a lot of noise when using the effects loop (as a boost). When I pulled the patch cord out, the amp seemed so much quieter. I'm thinking it might be tube driven and in need of a new tube...

Anytime you increase the gain of a circuit, the noise will increase. An effects loop is not intended to be a boost ciruit although many people use it as such. It is intended to drive other devices and maintain unity gain or close to it, from in to out.
