Just finished my first amp (Tweed Deluxe) from Tube Depot last night. The good news is that it works great - except for a couple of things.

First, I get very little sound out of the normal channel (1 or 2). Moving the volume up and down makes no difference.

Second, it sounds great in the bright channel, but there's an odd harmonic or buzz that comes through on some frequencies. Don't notice it much when cranked to 12. More when it's in the 5 range. It appears at the end of note - if that makes any sense.

I did all the tests and everything seems within the recommended ranges. I've also gone over everything three times.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Basically you need to go through the following steps:

1. Recheck all your parts locations against the board layout.
2. Recheck all your wiring against the schematic and wiring diagram.
3. Recheck all your solder joints and make sure they are solid. A cold joint can cause noise and other problems.
4. Make sure all your wiring is neat and clean. The tube heater wires should be kept away from the signal wires as much as possible as the signal wires can pick up hum from the heater wires. If they cross each other, they should do so at 90 degrees.

Photos would be helpful.

I built the same kit, but had no problems except for on single cold solder joint that caused some crackling on the Bright input. Didn't show up at first. it's been fine ever since.
Like Bill said, check all the values of the components. I would suspect that if all the wiring and components check out, check the joints around the input jacks. I would also pull the board and check all the solder joints to be sure you have no solder bridges or starved joints. I have a light with a built in magnifier built in and check all my connections with that. Be sure the pots are correctly wired too and there's no shorts. You can contact Rob Hall too. Great guy and really helpful.

The Tube Depot 5e3 is a great kit. I did a speaker upgrade to a Weber AlNico and changed the stock 5 watt resistor to an 8 watt Ohmite Brown Devil. Funny thing is that amp is crazy loud for a 5e3. I contacted Rob about the output of this thing and he said that it in the 18 to 20 watt range. Don't know about that, but I know it's a bit ;louder than the 12 or 13 watts of the originals that I've had a chance to try out over the years.

More efficient, modern built speaker.

I really like that Weber. The amp comes with a 50 watt Jenson Mod series speaker. I like the Mod speaker with my EL84 powered 5 watter, but not the 5e3. I'll be ordering a cab for it soon.

Four Signature 10AS series in my 5F6A clone, broken in nicely and sound great.

Thanks for the suggestions. I'll go through everything tomorrow and post pics and audio if needed.

Sometimes, when one channel doesn't work and another is "kinda" ok --- could be a tone stack issue. As many amps have interactive channels. Bad components in one channel can bleed over to the other channel.

Maybe, worth a look.

Good luck with the amp!

How do you check this?

Here is an mp3 with the buzz or hormonic I'm talking about.

Any thought?

Given the simplicity of the 5E3 tonestack (two caps and a pot) and the fact that this is a new build, I doubt you need to worry about "bad" components. Just check all your connections and solder joints first. Then we can walk you through more specific tests.

Sounds like the noise I heard in my 5F6A build that was due to a bad connection in one of the input jacks. Check everything as already suggested.

I agree. I always check the parts with my meter to be sure they're in spec. I've never seen a problem yet.

I would look very closely at the jacks and where the pots ground to the back of the pots on the ground buss. If it was anything major, you'd see the magic smoke. If those resistors aren't soldered properly, vibration will cause a bunch of problems.
