..... put one of these in V4?
http://www.tubedepot.com/jj-ecc803g.html

A regular JJ ECC83s is not the same tone. This "upgraded" tube is more dynamic and seems fuller, more complex, better note separation & definition, and most surprisingly, bass that is louder and not as flubby.

And why would the Reverb Return influence the sound so much anyway (even when the knob has if "off")? Is the Reverb part of the circuit on the Vibrato side at all times, whether the reverb is engaged or not? Is the Tremelo/Vibrato too (I did not test changing tubes there, should I?)?

Anyway, lots of questions from my fat head. Thanks for any enlightenment!

..... we now return you to your regularly scheduled programming ......

Only half of V4 is used for the reverb recovery, the other half is a gain stage for the Vibrato channel, and the half that is a gain stage is active with and without reverb. The Vibrato tube will not affect tone much, if at all, it's only used to vary the signal for the Vibrato effect.

If you want to experiment some more, pull V1 and try the Vibrato channel with that tube out. Compare the sound with and without that tube installed.
