Hello,

I have a Hot Rod Deluxe II amp and i think i have some problem with the effect loop.
When i connect some effects on the effect loop, i got no sound.
If i put the volume on 12 i can hear some sound, but the sound is thin and distorted.

I tested the same setup on another Hot Rod Deluxe III and it worked fine.
So i'm sure i have some problem in my amp.

I did some tests...

first test - i plug the guitar directly on the POWER AMP IN, and i could hear the sound... the sound was louder and lower compared when i plug right on the INPUT but i got some sound.

- i plug the PRE AMP OUT to the input of another amp and i couldn't get no sound on the second amp... there was sound only on my Fender.

With this tests, i think there is a problem on the PRE AMP OUT of my amp.
I have knoledge on electronics, so i can check it out.

Does anyone have any suggestions for me?

Thanks in advance,
Wagner.

Hi wcampagner,

The problem might be with the U1 op amp, or the circuit around the op amp, four resistors and a cap, or the Preamp Out jack itself. I would suspect poor solder joints for the jack. You have to remove the main circuit board to inspect the solder joints, and to replace any faulty components.

Hello Shimmilou,

Thanks for the answers.
I'll check it out and put the result here.

I think it is a simple problem that i can check out.

The only problem is that i never serviced an tube amp.
So i want to know if there is something i need to know before start the job.
Do i need to discharc CAPS or any other security procedures to avoid electric shock?

Yesterday i opened the amp and i noticed that there is a lot to do to take the main board out. I'll need to take all the controls knobs and lots of screws.

So i decided to do this in a few days slowly not to destroy anything.

Thanks,
Wagner.

Better yet, why not use the warranty and let a pro do it?

Hi Shimmilou,

The problem is that i think i have no warranty.
Although the amp is new i live in Brazil and bought from the USA.
So i think i have no warranty.

Thanks again,
Wagner.

OK. Yes, make sure that the caps are discharged. They should discharge on their own when you turn the amp off after playing, while the tubes are still hot. Just check with a meter to be sure that the voltage on the caps is low, maybe around 20 VDC or less is fine. Unplug the amp from electricity before dis-assembly. Be careful not to put stress on the big white resistors at the bottom middle of the board when removing and replacing the board, so as not to break the solder joints there. Inspect all joints/traces closely while you have the board out. You probably don't have to disconnect the transformer wires to swing the board out enough for servicing, just cut the wire ties.

Hello Shimmilou,

Thanks for all your help.
On this weekend i opened up the amp.

And i took out the main board and when i was inspecting the effect loop board area i found that two solder joints were short-circuit... and it was putting the PRE AMP OUT to ground.

I just took the short-circuit with my solder iron and the problem was solved.

Very easy... it was harder to take the main board out than to fix the problem.

Thanks again,
Wagner.

Great news, good job!

Yes, removing that board is not easy. I'm glad that you fixed your amp and are able to rock again. 8)
