What tubes are you using for a grunge sound in your Hoy Rod Deluxe amp? I'm searching for a warm throaty overdrive sound out of the drive channel

I don't know about grunge, but for a warmer sound, you might try some lower gain preamp and PI tubes. Specifically a 5751 in V1 and a 12AT7 in V3. The 5751 and 12AT7 will make the sound smoother and warmer, while you still get some rich drive with a 12AX7 in V2.

Thanks for the input (pun intended) I already have at least one lower gain tube I think in v1. I have a pretty satisfying tone now by diming all the tone and drive then defeating the presence. Always looking for a way to get this drive channel to warm up.

In addition to the lower gain tubes in V1 and V3, the Chinese 12AX7s typically have a warmer/smoother drive tone with a lot of gain, and might be a better choice for V2 if you have a Sovtek tube there. The Sovtek tubes sound more edgy/crisp by comparison. Also, a Tung Sol 12AX7 might be a good choice for V2, with a little less gain than the Chinese, but also pretty smooth and warm.

Just checked I do have a 5751 Jan Phillips in v1 and a tung sol in v2 does v3 really have an effect on tone?

Not so much on the actual tone, but the way in which the output tubes are driven. A lower gain tube in V3 can really smooth out the response of the output tubes so that they reproduce the preamp sound instead of distorting as much as with a 12AX7 driving them. It's all subjective, but I've tried nearly every type in all three positions, and IMO a 12AT7 in V3 was perfect for the sound that I wanted, much smoother. It's easy enough to try it and see what you like. Another 5751 in the V3 position might be enough for your needs, or a 12AT7 just might do the trick.

I switched v1 and v2. I put the JAN Phillips in the v2 slot and the Tong Sol in the v1 slot. I like this combination. Seems more balanced overall. Tone isn't so spikey. The clean isn't as warm, but that's okay. I think it was too warm before. My acoustic sounds better through it too. More balanced. Clearer. The drive channel is less gainy, and I think I've found a sweet spot.

I've gone back to basics just using a delay pedal through the loop. Before I was using a pedal board and getting dirty tones out of a Big Muff along with compression, and EQ going through the clean channel via loop, no loop. So I'm trying to get back to using the drive channel for my sound. I like it so far. Switching tubes seems to balance out the amp for me. It was okay sounding before switching, the drive sounded good wide open, just too much grind and not enough of anything else. It seemed to go from nothing to middle road begging to be driven fully. So now I have the drive set at @5 and I'm getting just enough drive. Tone controls are also backed down to @5 with presence back up to wide open. Sounds good to me this way.

Thanks for the advice shim, you've been on here a long time and I value your replies. Now the only thing left to do is dig up a 12AT7 for v3. I know I have one, the integrity might be a bit iffy though. No way for me to test for that I suppose. I mean, I know it will work, but they'e old tubes from radios a friend gave to me.

That's great! If you do try a 12AT7 in V3, try it with V1 and V2 the way that you have them now, and also swap V1 and V2 again, just so that you try different combinations as the 12AT7 will change the dynamics. The difference for V1 and V2 will be between boosting a tamed signal, or taming a boosted signal. You might even like a 5751 in V1 and V2.
