yeah I read up on biasing and watched the video you posted, thanks for that.
it seems biasing on the deville's isn't so hard because the bias screw thing is on the PCB on the outside or something, I just have to not touch anything else I guess.
I ordered new tubes because I decided I'll bias it (pray for me), I ordered tesla jj 6L6GC's.
Any extra tips for not burning my arm off when biasing?

There is really no such thing as "JJ/Tesla", it's a deceitful marketing ploy, playing on the reputation of Tesla. Pure BS as the two different companies never made the same tubes, and neither produced their tubes at the same time as each other. JJ bought some used equipment from Tesla, after Tesla stopped making the 12AX7, and that's the only "relationship" their tubes had. Even with the same equipment, the JJs aren't at all like the old Tesla tubes. Using the same ploy, I'll sell you some awesome "Shuguang/RCAs", as the Chinese got some used RCA equipment way back when. Considering differing tastes, you might like the JJ just fine.

As far as being safe, only touch the live circuit with the positive lead of your meter, and don't touch the circuit with your hand, arm or body. The test point is very low voltage (mV), but the Plate voltage is about 430 VDC. Just use caution, and carefully place your meter lead only on the point that you want to measure. Just take your time and you'll be fine. :)

Alright the tubes showed up and I put them in and everything's fine so thanks for your help there.
I then tested it out and I'm not sure, maybe it's my ears or something but when I play on the bridge pickup with the selector in the middle like usual it sounds a lot bassier and less clear than before. Sounds warmer sure but yeah less clarity.
Also when my pedals are running through it it howls, lots of hum and what not.

First, what was your Plate voltage and test point voltage?

Could you clarify about using the bridge pup with the selector in the middle? The pup selector in the middle would be the middle pup on a Strat, and both pups on a LP. :?

As far as the howl, are you using too much gain, and/or standing very close to your amp?

No idea what the plate voltage was but I set the test point to 73

I have it on bridge pickup with the selector thing on my jazzmaster, the toggle on the bottom in the middle.
I use a lot of gain yes but don't stand so close.
Maybe I just need to fiddle with the eq settings a bit more.

The Plate voltage should be close to 485 VDC in your amp, so 73 mV at the test point is about 17 watts idle per output tube, which seems just about right. The difference in sound could be because of different tubes, there are lots of "flavors" of tubes, just find the ones that you like best.

Yes, you'll probably have to try some different settings with the new tubes than you had before, maybe less gain too. It's too easy to get feedback (howl) with the gain turned up and using pedals. Less is more.
