I have a 2001 Hdr, its making a strange crackling sound and a slight ringing sound thats not as noticeable. i retubed it with jj ecc 803s which didnt help much. i have tryed the stock fender tubes in different positions, tryed a new set of jj ecc 803s and tryd some cheap china made 12ax7's and i also tryd a groove tube 12at7, i have try most of these tubes in all postions and im still getting the crackling ringing sound.

I think the problem is with the v1 socket every tube i put in v1 rings very loud when i tap it and all the other sockets are not nearly as loud as v1 when tapped, i even tryd the 12at7 in v1 and it didnt help, so im guessing it not a tube problem.

i bought it used, and had to resolder one of the joints on the big 500v cap and 1 joint on the v3 tube socket which got rid for alot of the crackling noise it was making. also changed out the stock speaker with an old vintage 30.

i hope someone can help me, thanks

V1 is always more sensitive than the other positions, it will produce sound when tapped, that's normal.

Did you forget about the output tubes?

i replaced those also with jj 6l6's with no change with the crackling, its seems to act up more after its been on for awhile and heats up, its not so bad that i cant use it and the noises it makes are not that loud, but it bothers me.

overall when im playing through the clean channel it has kinda of a dirty sound thats not normal. I tune to C and when i hit the lower notes it makes a hollow rattling glass sound.

im am going to recheck the solder joints on the tube sockets, is there anything else i can test?

i dont know much about amps, but i know how to drain the caps, set bias, and know how to use a volt meter.

First, I assumed that you meant HRd (Hot Rod), as I don't know what HDR is. If you have a HRd, plug your guitar into the "Power Amp In" and see if you still have the noise. This will bypass the preamp section and maybe help to isolate where the noise originates. Also, any difference at lower volume when plugged into the input?

2001? I would touch up all the tube socket joints and replace the filter caps too. The originals were cheap to start with and are probably due. Mine did the same thing. it turned out to be bad solder joints on the tube sockets. Mine was easy because one of the tubes wouldn't fire up.

They're the large ones. They need to be drained and the voltage checked before you touch them or any part of the circuitry for that matter. They can store voltage even when they're unplugged. It might be a good idea to let a tech do it if you have no electronic experience. The voltages can kill you.

FWIW, JJ ECC803S (or any long plate 12AX7) are NOT recommended for use in small combo amps as they are much more prone to microphonics than short plate tubes, especially in V1.

Yep, that's why I used rubber gromets to "shock mount" my V1 socket on my 5E3. So far so good and I've been really ringing that amp out looking for bugs. So far nada.

So i got my amp back, i plugged my guitar into the power amp in and it still has a dirty crackling sound to it, and when i have it plugged into the input it makes the same noise on low volume then then when i turn it up it gets worse, last practice i had it turned up around 2.7-3 volume on the clean channel and it cut out completley but this was after 1.5-2 hours for playing, when it cut out it would only make fuzzy crackling sounds

also when i first started doing those tests today it didnt make very much noise until i let it warm up for about 20 minutes, also the big 500v cap is making a hum/buzz sound, is that normal?

Sounds like its time for the amp to visit a good amp tech.
