Thanks guys, I was glad I found a solution to my own problem without any help. One final question and the amp will be done. What size wire should i use for the speaker? I know Tube Depot gives 18 ga but I've seen some people who recommend 16. Will 18 work fine?

For such a short distance, 18 would be fine but if it were me, I'd go with 16.

Alright, I'll go with 18 for now but I'll probably replace it with 16 in the near future.

18 works fine for me. You can go 16 if you like. Like Bill said, it's a really short distance. I kept mine as short as possible to keep it from getting accidentally pulled out of the speaker jack when I put the power cord in the back. Mojo makes a decent cloth cover for it and it's pretty inexpensive.

Well I got the amp entirely constructed with the cab and everything, but there's one problem. The speaker makes a horrendous rattling noise by the time I turn it to 4 and get any distortion. I know it's not the speaker because I've tried both a smooth cone and a ribbed cone and both have been used before in my Bandmaster cabinet without any problem. Any help here? And also, I cranked it to 12, just for fun, and the sound seemed to cut in and out at times. It doesn't seem to do this at lower volumes. Is this okay?

Have you tried wiring the amp to an extension cabinet only, to isolate the source of the offending noise?

It's possible the rattling you hear is the amp enclosure itself.

That's what I have read. I'll try that as soon as possible.

No, it s not OK. If you are having bad cabinet vibrations, they may be enough to shake a poor solder joint and cause it to be intermittent.

+1 Check the baffle and be sure the chassis is snug enough. Hopefully you didn't over-tighten the speaker and warp the basket. A lot of people really crank them down. On the other hand if you don't have full contact with the baffle it will buzz and vibrate. But like Bill says, it's not good. You can really stir up a ton of problems if it isn't corrected. Check all the nuts and bolts. I put a dab of nail polish on all the nuts and bolts after I tighten them. Be sure it's not tube rattle too.

Well I hooked up the deluxe to one of the speakers in my Bandmaster cabinet and it worked fine. Sounds like I have a regular case of tweed cabinet rattle I guess. And it has to be coming from the baffle or the speaker because I don't even have the chassis in the amp yet (I haven't drilled the holes to mount it yet) and so I also don't have the back panel on. Any help here?

Some suggestions:

1.) Like Supro said, be sure speaker frame is lightly (we are talking several inch-pounds not foot-pound) and EVENLY to the baffle. Do not use a cordless power tool to tighten the nuts. Just a screwdiver shaft with a socket on the end is fine.

http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/6 ... L1500_.jpg

2.) Use the "Old poker player card trick." One-by-one cards into seam. This works for non finger-jointed edges (obviously).

The loose corner(s) will react best with the cards. And prolly need more cards to be effective. You can redo the loose joint or try filling the gap with silicone sealer.

3.) For finger-joints --- I've spread the loose pieces of wood, at the joint, with EVEN pressure or very subtle rubber mallet "*love-taps." Opened the joint slightly, so you can get wood glue into the joint. Clamp the edges or corners. Wipe off excess.

* If you do "love-taps" --- get a piece of flat wood to place onto cab and tap this flat piece. Don't tap directly onto the cab. (I know you already know this...) :D

Thanks! I'll probably try the speaker and baffle before I start disassembling the finger joints, but if it comes to that I'm glad I have this info. And thanks for the info on the love taps, I probably would have just tried tapping the bare cabinet!

DrewMeyer,

I forgot one thing. This is A DIY project. I assume (and you know what can happen when you do this... --- that the cab has NOT been tolex'ed yet.

If it has... be VERY careful about prying joint apart. You might want to try laying a bead of clear silicone on the offending joint, first. Try to force the goop into the loose passages. And pray this works.

Inspect the baffle board's contact with the cab. Check the screws that hold the board to the cab. Maybe one is loose or spinning in its hole.

Good luck!
