Folks

Probably a really daft question but am just getting used to this new amp (HRDIII)... and tube amps in general.

Is there a "neutral" position for the bass, treble, middle and presence settings where they neither boost or cut? I'm assuming like most guitar pots they all cut when raised above the zero (or 1) position?

Hi aj.in.oz,

The HRDlx just has a traditional type tone stack. Set it where you like it, that's all. The "cut" is all the way down (CCW), and increasing (CW) is less "cut", there is no "boost".

Thanks shimmilou. Yeah I _did_ say it was daft question :-)

I guess i'm after clarification where the tone/presence position is making _minimal_ difference to the original tone... I guess it's fully CW (12 on the HRD) for the tone controls.

Is Presence also a cut, or is there a treble boost?

You're making my head hurt!

The presence control in this amp is in the negative feedback circuit, and as it is turned up (CW) it dumps more of the higher frequencies from the negative feedback circuit to ground. So you really hear more higher frequencies as you turn up the presence, but I don't know that you could call that a boost, but rather less restriction on the higher frequencies that already exist. With the presence control turned down, all frequencies are restricted by the negative feedback (less gain), and as you turn up the presence control you are effectively releasing the restriction on mostly the higher frequencies. Does that make any sense?

Thanks again shimmilou. Sorry about the headache :-)

Yes, this all makes sense now.

This is what the HRDIII frequency response looks like with tone stack controls set to 12 noon:

I have a graph that depicts the operation of the presence control, but I will have to load it onto my computer.

To add to what shimmilou said, the presence control changes the closed loop gain of the power amp section that is defined by the NFB circuit between the OPT secondary and the Phase Invertor. As presence is increased toward 12 on the control, the closed loop gain in the high frequencies is increased (yes, it is a boost). As you turn the control back toward zero, the closed loop gain flattens back out.

Nice graph. It sure does depict the bass response of this amp. That's the first thing I noticed when I was shopping for an amp. Wow this thing gets deep quick! In contrast, the middle ground is very balanced. Which is something I wouldn't expect from a guitar amp. I'd expect the mids to be more prominent. Thanks again for the graph.

You're welcome.

The download for the tool can be found here:

http://www.duncanamps.com/tsc/index.html

All component values can be modified to match the amp characterisitics.
