Every time I play a not or strum a chord I get a crackling sound or the amp cuts out entirely. Any clue as to what the cause or solution to this might be?

Look like a broken solder/ printed circuit in Power Supply , Or defective resistor in Power Supply .Or broken solder in output tube socket.
Test outputs tubes too.

Amp is old ?

Under waranty ? if yes bring back

Thanks for the response. It's probably about 8-10 years old. I doubt it's still under warranty and I bought it in VT and live in CT. How do I test the output tubes?

Sure no waranty ,

Testing tubes ; put new one , but bias check is needed by a tech with new power tubes.

Many chances solder broken inside too. Better to find a good tech , not anybody in music store. Talk to musician around you

I agree with stratele52. Sounds like it could be either a bad solder joint on the tube socket or possible a bad output tube. They were notorious for bad solder joints. Mine had tons of problems but on mine the crackling sound came from bad solder joints on the output tube sockets. It's an ease fix if you're handy with a soldering iron. With the amp turned off and unplugged, re-flow the solder joints.

+1 for sure. Once in a while I forgot we all don't build or repair amps.

At ten years old, I'd check the condition of the filter caps too. Look for leakage or swelling at the ends. They don't the finest capacitors on the market in the HRd series or even most series.

Yeah, I'm surprised that they use the same IC brand caps even in the high-dollar amps, probably all Fender amps. I know a few techs that even use them in vintage amps. :o Not me!

What do you use? That is info to keep in a pocket for further use.

Usually F&T for power supply caps, or Sprague. Sprague Atoms for bypass caps and bias caps are a good choice for values not offered by F&T. Even the Nichicon aren't bad. IC isn't exactly horrible, but no reason to skimp on caps, I like to get good quality parts that will last, and that's worth a little extra.

Thanks, Shimmilou. Billy Penn is making a name for himself by putting in better quality electric parts in brand new amps to make them sound "proper". My sense is that certain parts are about more than lasting, although that is a huge plus, and very much about the quality of the final tone output and control.

Like tubes, there are tonal variations in parts of the same specs. You know that, I'm sure.
