I play a fender twin and a 2004 tornado.

The trouble is I cannot seem to find a proper EQ balance. A general / simple EQ provides a warm balance tone on the low strings; however, the high end is extremely bright. I have played with the EQ until I am blue in the face. If I roll of the highs the mids/lows become to muddy.

Is there a speaker out there that could provide a better balance?

Any of the Weber Vintage Series. Just email Weber for a recommendation as to which models. I recently put their speakers in my Bassman LTD and Vibrolux and they're simply outstanding. Only reason I don't recommend a specific model to you is that the Twin takes 12's and most of my experience is with 10's.

Have you ever stopped to consider that p'raps you have a *guitar* problem?

I've never heard a one of those Tornado's that didn't sound like pure unadulterated crap. They're basically an entry-level guitar, Seymour Duncan's name on the pickups notwithstanding.

Have you tried a different (ie: higher quality) instrument with your amp? Did you find the same difficulty in trying to develop some pleasing EQ settings?

I've got a problem with a used Twin reissue I recently bought. Too damn bright. It has the Special Design by Eminence speakers. I used to have a real blackface twin and it was deep, warm, & fat. This amp is just ridiculously bright. It has groove tubes in it, that can't help, but I did replace some preamp tubes. It helped a little, but it still is quite unbearable to play. I am just afraid if I put 2 new speakers in this it still won't sound very good and I'll have thrown good $$ after bad. Any guys with a reissue twin that have also played the real thing think speakers will solve my problem?

Try a pair of Weber 12F150's with light doping.

A 5751 in V2 really helped with this.

Definitely check out Weber's web site.
They just came out with the "Amsterdam" model, which claims a more subdued top end.
I just got my own '65 reissue, and while I tend to like the C12K, I may try the "Amsterdam" myself after I gig this monster.
I am also eyeballing the Jensen MOD series, the Eminence CANNABIS REX and the Jensen C12N. These all seem like good possibilities for some earlier breakup.
I guess I'm looking at another expensive hobby to go with tube rolling. Oh well...

If you can, drag that behemoth over to a guitar store and try plugging in a 212 cab of your liking. Or if you have access to one, try that first. This way you know if getting new speakers will help. Back when I had my trri, I swapped out the Eminence speakers and was running a Celestion V30 and a Rola Celestion G12 80. It took away a lot of the brightness and sounded much better.

Well, this was just my experience with this amp. Hope this helps.
