Just got a new DR the other day and love it. However, I noticed that when I turn on the amp and crank the reverb above 7 a very noticeable hum will start and get more pronounced unless I turn the reverb off or down. It will do this until the amp gets warm. Then I can crank the reverb up with no problem. Am I looking at a tube problem? I checked all the tubes and only one was a bit lose, but this didn't help. I know I can take it back and let a tech look at it but the nearest fender dealer is 80 miles away and it would just be cheaper to replace the tube myself. Any suggestions?

On another note, do they make doggy ear plugs? My wiener dog starts to howl when I play anything on the high E string above the 11th fret.

Hi Bob38,

Very likely V3 which is a 12AT7, or less likely but possibly V4 a 12AX7.

Thanks

I think all I needed was a little conformation on my theory.

I can't help but note that I'm having similar issue, but it seems entirely related to my amp stand. Before you dismiss this as a joke, if you use a tilt back stand like I do, take it off the stand and set it upright and see if it still misbehaves. I think it has to do with the orientation of the transducers in the reverb tank. The immediate solution IMO would be to shim the tank on the back side so that it is level when the amp is not. Or simply use the amp in the upright position only. Hope this helps.

I think I have the same type of problem. Today while trying different settings I noticed that when I adjusted the reverb higher than 5 I started to get a high pitch squeal or feedback. The feedback gets worse as I increase the setting and goes away when I decrease the setting to below 5.
Do I have the same problem as the OP? if it is a tube are they covered by warranty repair?

I was hoping the reverb issue on the Blackface re-issues would come up again. My relatively new TRRI has always produced a hum when the reverb is turned way up (past 6 or so). I never think to bring this up because I rarely turn it past 4 where it's OK. I have changed the tubes and that's not it. It's not that loud, but definitely there and would like to know if anyone else has had this problem and knows how to fix it. Is it normal?

I don't think so. My 1999 TRRI is quiet as a church mouse regardless of the reverb level. IIRC, some folks have reported good luck by replacing the send and receive cables connecting the chassis to the tank with higher-quality types with better shielding. You might give that a try -- cables are not terribly expensive and easy to swap.

Bob38, could be the start of a microphonic tube. You have a known good 12AT7 and 12AX7 that you can sub into the reverb driver and recovery positions?

April fools or not, hum is no joke..
Any metal near a sensitive transducer can induce hum .
So a metal amp stand can becomes a reradiator of 60 cycle hum.
Speakers can also reradiate hum. Any stray metal nearby should be grounded to the chassis or run a wire to the U-ground of an AC outlet.
Hum is also radiated from power transformers. It doesn't have to come from the amp, but perhaps from a wall wart transformer next to it.
In general, the sensitive output coil of the reverb tank should be at the opposite end from the power transformer.
Most feedback problems with reverb are microphonic reverb return tubes. Substitute V! with V4 and see if it stabilizes.
Most hum problems with reverb are cabling or interference issues. Tighten the RCA plugs by pinching the outer ears.
You can detect outside interference by rotating the amp through the compass points while it is turned on. If the hum changes as you rotate it, it's outside interference. If it doesn't change, take it over to a friends house and see how it does.
Sometimes wrapping the tank with aluminum foil is worth a try to shield stubborn interference.

No joke on the amp placement, I investigated further and it appears that the transducer coils (or whatever those little transformer looking deals are on the reverb tank) are not properly secured and I think that's what's causing it. Stock tank is an Accutronics made by Beldon, which I've heard nothing but bad things about so I just ordered one of the MOD replacement ones and it seems to be made better, though very similar. Changing a few other things in the amp as well (not related to the reverb) and we'll see if that takes care of it. I think the tank was like $20 from AES/Tubesandmore.

EDIT: Well I've replaced everything but the cables and while the high pitched feedback of the factory tank is gone, it has been replaced with a low frequency hum. Maybe Fry's has some decent RCA cables I can grab on my way home from work tomorrow...

EDIT: EDIT: Found some RCA cables at the house and it seems that's the problem, more precisely the sharp angle the straight ends of the cable are forced to make when put into the bag. So, tank out of the amp plugged in, no problem. Shove it in the bag and then we get noises. Oh Fender, why did you not just put cables with right angle ends on them to begin with?

EDIT: EDIT: EDIT: Okay so after nearly a year I've finally managed to get this thing to stop howling with the reverb dimed. R32. Change it to 1.2M~1.5M and it'll stop the feedback. You could probably lower R33 to 100K and maybe get the same effect or even add a 1M pot in place of R26, aka the AB763 Dwell mod. Hope this helps anyone else with this problem.
