Even after performing somewhat complex Billm mods on my blues junior, I can't seem to figure out how to replace the pots on my HRD 410. I just ordered the volume, treble, and drive pots for my HRD 410. In trying to remove the current pots, I am having difficulty.

Does anyone know how to remove these things? Below is a picture of one of the snap in pots that I purchased and the old pot as it currently sits in my amp.

Thanks in advance for any help, guys. Rock on!

I use a solder wick (or solder sucker). Draw up as much of the old solder as possible, at every connecting point to the PCB board. You may need a small diagonal cutter to cut off the remaining tangs --- as they might be twisted into position. DO NOT PULL up on the pot, unless all contact points are free. Doing so may damage the board and/or tracings.

I put a touch of solder rosin onto the new contact points. Place onto board. Use a good TIN/LEAD solder.

Good luck!

Thanks BWM. I have a solder sucker, but wasn't sure if that was necessary. The solder I have is Rosin Core.... is that not good enough?

+1

You'll need to remove as much of the original factory solder as possible -- use a sucker and then a wick dipped in rosin flux to clean it away from all contact points. The RoHS-compliant stuff does not "play well with others".

I use an actual de-soldering iron. It's a soldering iron with a hollow tip connected to a ball. You squeeze the ball heat the joint and release the ball. It's one unit and does a really fine job. Radio Shack sells them for around fifteen bucks.
