My hot rod has developed a strange noise when playing that sounds similar to a light ring modulation effect. It only happens when playing. What could this be?

I would start with the preamp tubes then the power tubes.
The fastest and easiest way to diagnosis- merely replace the
small preamp tubes ONE AT A TIME with a replacement tube
known to be good. MAKE SURE you keep returning the tubes to their original socket until you hit the one that cures the problem.

The Power Tubes need to be changed with
an equivalent matched set.

I figured it out. I had a fan blowing near my amp and it was rattling the tubes.
