It was the sound we've all heard when we plug a cable into the guitar without first turning down the volume on the amp or putting the amp on Standby. Same sound only much louder, with more crackling, and more low buzz/hum.

The first time it happened I almost had to change my pants. I immediately put the amp on Standby, had a "WTF" moment, then after catching my breath, cautiously took the amp off Standby and all was well.

I have the guitar going into a tuner and the output of the tuner into Input 2 of the amp. After it happened the last time, I jiggled the plug of the cable going from the tuner to the amp and heard some crackling/static. I checked the cable with a cable tester and it's fine. Afterward I did the jiggle with the same cable and this time there was no crackling/static.

My uneducated guess would be a bad or weak solder joint of Input 2 which means that I would be taking the amp in for servicing as it is still under warranty. Could it be something else? Is there something I can test to rule out other possibilities.

Thanks & Cheers!
BM

Pretty good guess. Eliminate all other components, guitar straight into amp, then try again. If you still have the noise, try input 1 also. A jack in your tuner, or even a cable could be the source of the problem. Even though you checked the cable, try another to be sure. BTW, you can use the Preamp Out for your tuner, no need to have it in the signal chain at all.

P.S.
Didn't we already cover this once before?

Hi shimmilou. Thanks for the quick reply.

I changed the cable and will also be doing the other steps as you suggested in order to diagnose the problem.

Your comment on the tuner got me thinking and jarred my memory. When I tune in "normal" mode - one string at a time - the tc electronic tuner appears to function as a bypass. When the tuner switches to polymode - this happens automatically if you strum - then I hear a low volume, pulsating sound from the amp. I'm not sure what this means but it can't be good.

Regarding the Preamp Out, I'm using it for the analog delay. I suppose I can also put the tuner in there as well?

As for covering this before, I think you may be referring to a different sound - one of a sizzling nature - which turned out to be a microphonic preamp tube. I ended up changing all the preamp tubes to tame the beast and also get a more Bluesy sound.

    Cheers!

I thought that maybe you weren't using the loop. The tuner might, or might not work better in the loop, give it a try. Let us know if you discover anything about your noise. The input jacks are likely suspects. Although I've never had a problem with my factory jacks, I changed mine to Switchcraft.

Follow-up diagnostics: It happened again, this time with the guitar plugged into Input 2 and the tuner in Preamp Out. I've now removed the tuner and have only the guitar plugged into Input 2.

At this point the likely culprit seems to be the input jack. Testing continues ...

Cheers!

+1 Shimmilou.

If you move your guitar cable when plug in the input jack and it make the noise , problem is the jack / broken solder.

That makes sense, stratele, but the problem seems to be intermittent which makes it difficult to diagnose. When it happened the last time - some five hours ago just before my previous post - I jiggled the guitar cable, pulled it out of the amp, plugged it back in, and there was no noise. I just finished a two hour session with only the guitar plugged into the amp in Input 2 and there have been no issues.

    Cheers!

The latest occurrence was this morning as I was changing the BASS setting on the amp. The only thing plugged into the amp was the guitar in Input 2. The duration was very short and by the time I instinctively placed the amp on standby the noise was already gone. Still I waited a few seconds, took it off standby, and all was well. I proceeded to play with all the knobs on the amp but no noise.

At this point I'm at a loss to explain the disturbance because I haven't even been able to reproduce it consistently. Any ideas?

    Cheers!

I think of a broken solder on the PCB board . Broken solder or copper strip ( printed circuit ) broken. These broken solder could be on tube's socket and PCB. Or on the filter caps.

This make an intermittent contact .

You need to look the PCB on the copper side to see if there are any broken solder. Broken solder could be hard to see , small crack......

When you put amp on stanby there are almost not voltage in the amp so the amp can't work and can't make noise.

Merci, stratele! Given your diagnosis and that the amp is under warranty, I think I'll be giving my friendly Fender authorized dealer a call.

    Cheers!

Just one more question before I bring in the amp for servicing. Is there any possibility that it could be the tubes? The reason I ask is because the amp is under warranty but the tubes are not.

Thanks & Cheers!

Of course there is the possibility that it could be a tube(s). You seem to be fixated on input 2, why not try input 1 as suggested?

That was next on my list of things to try but when the noise happened as I was turning the BASS pot on the amp I figured the inputs were ruled out. However in light or your post I'll switch to Input 1 and continue testing. Thanks, shimmilou.

    Cheers!
