Hello all. I have an early 90's "The Twin" (black knob, 2x12). I noticed that one of the speakers is torn. Until I get a new one (not sure when that will be) can I disconnect the speaker and just run off of the other speaker? Would anything need to be changed powerwise to just use one speaker (remove tubes, etc)? Thanks.

Don't disconnect the speaker, you'll not only have an impedance mismatch, but you're libel to blow the other speaker too depending on its power rating. If it's a small tear, I'd try a little rubber cement. Personally, I'd just either get another one or have that one reconed and just leve the amp be.

It's a pretty good size tear. Too big to patch.

Hi cjackson111,

If disconnecting one speaker only gave you an impedance mismatch, you would be fine to use one speaker (two speakers 16 ohms total), as I believe that each speaker is rated 100 watts. There is an impedance selector switch that you can use to match the impedance of speaker and amp if desired. Unfortunately, the speakers in your amp are wired in series, meaning that disconnecting one speaker would leave the amp with an open circuit on it's output, which could cause damage to the amp.

What you can do is, disconnect the bad speaker, and reconnect the good speaker properly so that the amp has a load, and switch the impedance selector to 8 ohms if you want to match the impedance. Note that the positive wire from the amp connects to the first speaker, the negative of the first speaker connects to the positive of the second speaker, and the negative of the second speaker connects to the amp. What you need for one speaker operation is to connect the two wires from the amp (positive and negative) to just the one good speaker.

I agree that you probably shouldn't push your luck by cranking the amp if you only use one speaker. You could also use an external speaker cab connected to the main speaker jack of your amp, by unplugging the internal speaker plug and plugging in the external cab.

Damn Lou, you beat me to it. I had to step out and just got back. I just looked up the amp and it indeed looks like it has an impedance selector. It also looks like if I'm looking at the right amp a 25 watt setting just to be safe. I agree with Lou. I'd also switch it to 25 watts, disconnect the torn speaker set it to 8 ohms and watch the volume levels. The manual says that the speakers are 8 ohms each wired in series like Lou said, be sure to wire it properly.
I'm not sure about the speaker rating being 100 watts each. Could be because usually you would use double the rating of the amp. Retroverbial know this stuff inside and out.

Yes, I'd like to here what Retroverbial says about the speaker wattage, I would go with what he says. I just remember reading about a response from Eminence that they conservatively rated these speakers at 100 watts.

Great, thanks for everyone's help. I think just to be on the safe side I will just go ahead and replace the speaker so I don't try to run off of one speaker and accidentally mess something up. That amp is a loud sucker, I always run it at 25 watts.

+1

Fender didn't scrimp when it came to the power-handling specs for the speakers in these high-power amps. They're designed for 100-watt applications. That said, I'd be inclined to restrict the amp to the 25-watt setting until such time as the damaged speaker was repaired and re-installed. The impedance protocols as mentioned by shimmilou and supro should be observed.

That would be your best bet. I had a 100 watt 76 SF Twin that I lugged around for over 30 years. It was one of the most reliable amps I ever owned. It had the push/pull master volume control that I never used. They are loud. I wish I still had it. I sold it for some lower wattage/lighter gear. I don't play really ig venues any more so I really don't need all that power.I still have visitation rights though.
