I did my best to love the little critter but the love just wasnt there.
A great little amp in small venues or where you are going through a PA but will just not cut a larger room under it's own steam...of course I knew that going in.
I went back to store and after searching for the last five years for an amp that will make me happy,I have gone back to a hot Rod Deluxe...the new model.
Ive tried the supersonics, custom vibrolux, tremolux, voxes,Orange, marshall,Peavey (the classic was very good and if I weren't a fender endorsee, would have grabbed one again).
I love the Hot Rods...they do everything I need them to do.
I have a Boss/Fender reverb pedal and a Tremolux if I need them but the amp covers a lot of it for me.
I dont know why people knock the drive channel...what are they expecting to hear?...Plexi tones perhaps?...I hate to be the first to tell them...but this isnt a Marshall...its loud without being insane...great tones, portable and affordable...the tweed experiment was a bit of fun but my cabronita hated it...it gets along fine with the Hot Rod...as does my other Tele...Im content....for the moment

I always thought the damn thing was a one-trick pony -- just like all of those low-powered tweeds.

Im afraid I have to agree...Im thinking that the reverence for a lot of old amps and their reissues...not to take anything away from them because many are superb...is their association with a particular period in music history...the Hot Rods suffer from not having that association.
There were no Hot Rods at Abbey Road or in the snake pit...or on the studio floor at Stax...simply because they didnt exist.
But for a musician working in the Sydney club and pub scene, the Hot Rods do the job and do it very well.
If you like the drive channel but not the OD channel...use a dirt pedal...if you do like it ....use it.
The cleans are great and with the upgrades on the new series they are even better.
In time they will earn their place in the Fender history books and will be appreciated on their merits.

I built a 5E3 Deluxe clone and I have to agree. "Versatile" is not a word I'd use to describe the tweed Deluxe. If you like that sound, then that's awesome, but it's not an amp that will cover many bases. Of course, I also felt that way about my Hot Rod Deville when I owned one, but if that's what works for the OP, then that's fine.

I really like my HRDlx III. The cleans are good, not Balckface good, but they weren't designed to be. The drive channel is good once you play with it and find your sound. But in my opinion, they could have lost the "more drive" channel and put in Tremolo. I can use the Boss FDR-1 pedal for that though. (that one also gives my Champ 600 some verb and vibe, and some dirt for my TRRI.)

Just wished that they used real solder! But I have to agree. The third generation is a great sounding amp.

Curious as to what it sounds like with the matching 12 inch closed back cab. I haven't found any in stock around here.

If you like the sound of the Tweed Deluxe but you find it doesn't quite have enough jam
then maybe you should have a look at the Tungsten Crema Wheat.

Cheers mate...the Buckwheat looks pretty good...I guess if I had the money I would have grabbed the twinolux...but the hot rod covers a lot of ground for me...I actually like the more drive feature...it works for what I do.
The Hot Rod series suffer a bit through not being identified with any classic period in modern music and are seen as not having any mojo...but they are light enough and loud enough with good tone

Welcome back the HRD fold. In spite of the current issues I'm having with mine - see thread - I think the HRD is a great amp.

    Cheers!

My new Supersonic 60 has the Tremolux on it. I don't use it at all. I find it to be way too bright for my tastes. I really love the Bassman and the Burn channel.... I don't blame you for passing on this amp too.

Hi mate...the supersonic has the bassman and vibrolux on the clean setting...and to be honest,Im kicking myself for getting rid of that amp...god knows what I was thinking.
The tremolux is great for blues and stones stuff but in a bigger room not mic'd it would struggle.
Im doing an outdoor gig today (its raining of course) and the amp wouldnt have cut it.
The hot rod does fine in those settings.
Enjoy the supersonic mate...great amp
