Well, Weber finally delivered the correct front and rear panels for the amp. Only problem, they delivered the wrong color.

I ordered panels in black with white lettering (to use with white chicken head knobs) and they sent panels in gold with black lettering.

Oh, well. The base panel is black with a gold foil on one side, so I'm just going to polish the black backside of each panel and use white dry transfer lettering on them. I'll be adding extra switches and deleting the the master volume so that should work fine.

Might be able to start back up on the amp this weekend. We'll see how things go as I am feeling much better.

Managed to spend a few hours working on the amp today. Too long and my leg swells.

I decided to make some necessary chassis mods today. I started by drilling out the hole for the impedance selector switch as it was just a little too small. I installed the power and output transformers. I also installed the tube sockets (ceramic).

Image

Initially I had the two power tube sockets installed one hole over closer to the phase inverter socket. However, I found that the impedance selector (a two gang, three position rotary switch) ended up right above the V4 socket with very little room for all the wires. Also there was no good location for the bias pot. I first tried removing one gang of the rotary switch which helped, but not enough. So I decided to move both power tubes over one hole so that the original V4 hole was empty and V5 was now where a tube rectifier would be located (the JAVA chassis is common to Weber's JTM45 clone) putting both tubes directly behind the power tranny and above the two fuse sockets (plenty of room for all that wiring so should be OK). I then drilled the empty socket filler plate and mounted the bias pot where V4 would have been. I don't like the British style tube retainers for the E34Ls so I replaced them with the US/Fender style retainers.

Image

Looking at the inside of the chassis you can see the bias pot mounted in the V4 location. You can also see the two small terminal strips located near the power tube sockets. Those are used to connect the power tube input grid stopper resistors back to the circuit board. I'm not happy with the location of the strips (too close to the chassis wall) so will look for an alternate location for those two resistors.

Image

I polished up the black back of the correct but wrong color front panel (looks pretty good) prior to placing the dry transfer letters for the controls. I noted that the panel covers the two outermost input jack holes (I'm using only the high level input of the remaining pair). It looks like I will be able to just drill the plastic front panel and mount the bright switch and gain switch in those holes. Photo to come later.

Hopefully I'll be able to work a little more on the amp Sunday. Stay tuned. :D

Finished up the eyelet board with the remaining parts I ordered. I'll add the leads between the controls and tube sockets when I have things installed in the chassis. I find it easier to route wire that way.

I've elminated the master volume which required a little rewiring and need to add the wiring for the bright and gain switches. Things are moving along well.

Next weekend I'll start wiring up the chassis.

Bill,

Man! The size of those irons! That is Twin Reverb country. Bet, once the amp is done it may make a great little amp for bass use.

Good luck with your health and the project!

Don't know about it being a good bass amp but I bet it will be loud.

Happy day!

Stitches came out today and instead of an uncomfortable splint and bandages, I now have a stunning purple cast!

I go to see my surgeon again in two weeks (on my birthday, no less). :D

Bill...Purple sure is your color    All kidding aside, the amp is looking good so far and beemer is right, damn that is some huge iron there...ought to have some nice thump to it :!:

Sounds like you doing well footwise too! Remember to not overdo it...you always seem to be a pretty patience guy when amp building (and thorough too!) just apply that to your foot!

Purple was my wife's choice.

Thanks. The amp should get more interesting from here as I will be applying some additional mods.

Trust me. I am following my doc's orders to keep it elevated while I watch TV or work at the computer. I can't while working on the amp but I do that in short stretches then sit back and put my foot up. I want this to heal right. The walker is no fun and I am too clumsy on crutches.

Thanks. :D

I'm thinking maybe red when my doc changes the cast in two weeks.

Found some time today to do a little chassis wiring. Its going slow as I still have to stop and elevate my foot every now and then for a while, but I am making progress. :D

Image

I installed the impedance selector switch and the two speaker output jacks and wired things up to the secondary of the OPT. The red wire going into the grommet is just stuck in there to get it out of the way.

Image

I next wired up the output tube sockets with the screen resistors (5w, 1K ohm), and the input grid stoppers (1.5K ohm). I ran the yellow wires that go over to the eyelet board from the phase inverter outputs and the red wires that will connect to the screen power supply. The blue and brown wires connect to the OPT primary.

Image

Here's a little closer overall view of everything.

Image

Next week I'll start wiring up the tube heaters and hopefully the front control panel. Given the high gain of this amp, I'm using lessons learned from my 5F6A clone build to keep the wiring as short and clean as possible. I'll probably use shielded cable from the input jack to the grid stopper for V1 and maybe elsewhere.

Stayed tuned. Lots more to come. :D
