Thankful that your surgery went well. I have a solution for you. Place your recovering foot on your work bench while standing on your other leg. That way you keep your foot elevated and can still start your project.

At 59 years of age, I'm not that flexible. In fact, I don't think I was ever that flexible.

Bill, glad to hear it all went well. I know first hand it's no picnic. I had my left foot reconstructed way back and had three joints fused into one bone due to a congenital birth defect when I was in my twenties.
I'm glad it will work out for you.

Thanks man. :D

Foot feels even better today. Slept a lot better last night which helped. Might be able to start looking at the amp today.

Bill...Good to hear the surgury went well...sounds like your doc did a "Build Thread" on your foot  And do remember what I said about following the doc's orders post surgury, I pushed the limits with my first of three knee reconstructions, and 25 years later it still isn't right and not much they can do about it, but replace the whole thing.

Bill i own two of the amps you see here.....on this vid.. billy is playing a 45W

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... YrxqU#t=2s

Billy sold me an 18W prototype and the 30 watt you might see in the line up

mine are on the right, on the link-below the top one is the 18watt and the one below is the 30+ watt

http://i1059.photobucket.com/albums/t42 ... 8978ce.jpg

MM tranies and built with Ken's vibe/philosophy but Billy does his...tweaks also

the others is "chaz's" at his studio...another 18w

these particular amps are 'wreck front ends, cathode biased, and mine are 2x el84 and one 4x el84 as i have stated before i won't give up his tweaks - cuz

i am going to build my own...but with EL34's like Ken's (i love the mids) when i was blasting boogies for $$ - most of the time i ran the el34's

Billy played with the outlaws...you guys back east might remember that band....

here is his site...i am buying a combo from him next

http://www.redjonesamplification.com/

I will not touch the 30+watter...it is exactly as it should be, the 18w i did all sorts of testing on...and i am TRYING to find the data,

i yanked the Chicago caps used F&T's 2x47uf - regarding...i used 1n4007's 4 total bypassed with .01uf IKV and 470K in parallel works fine (i also bypassed the filter caps with .1uf films (lowers the esr) no need....

and these amps sound great and yours with the 4x12 cab...might as well make an appointment for surgery AGAIN cuz you are going to be jumping around all giddy....

i sometimes feed mine via a fender standalone reverb and pedal works fine...you'll love your amp when done...outta here...heal -play the pity card with the wife......

outta here gonna listen in - your posts are very informative.....

Thanks Art/T2. I was really too tired to do anything today. :(

FINALLY able to start working on the amp. Its a bit of a pain balancing on the left foot with my right knee on a short stool, but it works for a while anyway.

I decided to start dry fitting parts to the eyelet board. Nothing is soldered yet to allow me room to move things around as it is a tight fit with the large caps.

Here are the main power supply caps with their associated dropping resistors and the bias supply filter cap.

Image

There is no room on the top side of the board for the main cap's drain resistors and the 1K, 5 watt first dropping resistor, so I mounted them under the board. The board is mounted on studs (you can see them attached to the chassis. One will need to be relocated), so there is space under the board which should provide adequate airflow.

Stupid forum is giving me the "technical problems" error. Reported it to Brad.

Lets try again.

Finally, here are the rectifier diodes. I may be able to add the other two diodes per the Express schematic by hanging them in free space off the end diodes.

Image

I found that the wrong diode for the bias power supply was shipped. I forget the number but when I looked up the specs, it was nowhere close. Have to order a handful from Mouser or Newark. Local Rat Shack doesn't have them (1N4007).

Once I get more of the board loaded, I'll start soldering things up. Want to make sure that everything is right. I don't think I have the energy to stay up to 3:00 am like I did building the 5F6A clone, so this one may take a while.

Managed to do some more work on the amp today. I was able to get one of my chairs high enough so that I can sit at my workbench which makes life easier. :D

Still haven't received the correct front panels from Weber which were promised to go out two weeks ago. Sent them a somewhat harsh e-mail. Never had this problem before.

Had to order a couple of small value caps used as coupling caps as the included ones did not measure very well.

So, I was able to populate the eyelet board and tack solder more components today. The resistors that came in the kit are metal film. The carbon film ones in the photo are those I changed either value or higher wattage.

Image

A few parts are still missing that I have ordered.

I moved the bias supply filter cap to the backside of the board. I did not like how it mounted and looked on the top side. I know its probably not good to have too many parts on the underside of the board for repairability concerns, but that area of the board is crowded.

Image

Taking a lesson learned from my 5F6A clone build (viewtopic.php?f=13&t=65668), after soldering in the power supply caps I measured for shorts between the cap body and the eyelets where the leads were soldered. None were found. :D

Probably gonna have to do my taxes tomorrow so may not have time to work on the amp. I go back to work full time from home on Monday, so won't be able to spend any time on the amp during the week. Probably be able to do more next weekend.

Stay tuned for more.

Well, unfortunately, I've suffered a bit if a set back which will keep me from working on the amp for a while.

When I followed up with my surgeon on Tuesday 3/5 (first visit after surgery), he noted a redness of the skin on my right foot, so he put me on an antibiotic. I felt good the rest of the week. Unfortunately by Sunday night 3/10 I had developed a severe allergic reaction to the antibiotic. After talking to my surgeon and going to see my PCP on Monday 3/11, I ended up in the INOVA Fairfax Emergency Department with a nasty rash all over my body. Also, I was in terrible pain from my foot acting up. They ended up admitting me into the hospital around 5:00 am Tuesday morning. They put me in semi-isolation and began giving me powerful antibiotics (Vancomycin) to fight the infection. They also ran multiple tests looking for blood infections, bone infections, blood clots, heart problems (I was complaining of slight difficulty of breathing), etc. Finally, everything was resolved to the doctors satisfaction and they let me go home last night (Wednesday). I got home about 6:00 pm.

I’m gonna take it easy the rest of this week. I need to talk with the short term disability people about reactivating my disability and possibly taking next week off also. This week in the hospital has been more exhausting then the original surgery.

So I don't think I will be able to get anywork done on the amp for at least another week or two. But I'll be back.
