Bluesky,

Very good points to follow.

I had one question. Have you heard about capacitance & resistance "leakage" using black tagboards? I ask this because I have read where ppl had trouble hunting down oddball hum & other noises. Finally, going to phenolic turret boards to minimize this leak. The claim is the color pigment in the boards has black carbon.

I recall that Ken used mil spec turret boards on his original Trainwreck amps.

Thanks! Great learning experience for us all.

:D  :D

Actually, yes, I have heard about that phenomenon in relation to the boards used in early Fender Tweed amps. Supposedly that was one of the things that gave those amps their "mojo".

Weber describes their fiber boards thusly:

"Dense paper laminate with high dielectric strength and moisture resistance to prevent 'Tweed' disease."

Ken used phenolic perf board with something called "flea clips" which I have never heard of before.

Thanks for the compliment. :D

Been out of the cast for 2 weeks now but still in a heavy surgical boot/soft cast. Using a walker to get around but putting more and more weight on the foot each day. I use a cane to get around the house and the walker for work and outside errands (Today was my first day physically back in the office. Came home with a nasty migraine.). Hope to ditch the walker by this weekend and just use the cane with the boot. I go back to see my doctor on the 20th and hope to get word on how much longer I need to wear the boot.

I remember reading somewhere maybe a Gerald Weber article about Fenderitus where Leo used turret board that had some kind of fish oil in it that became conductive over a long time. Maybe I can find the article.

I've heard it referred to as "Tweed disease".

Bill,

Ever thought about running 6L6GC's. Heater load should be easier going from EL34 to 6L6GC.

Be curious to check out the tonal differences between the two.

Just a thought.

:)

The amp is designed to run with either EL34s or 6V6s. I already have two 6L6GC amps (my Bluesman 5F6A/C and BDRI), so I decided to go with the E34Ls/EL34s.

Made a couple of minor, but noticeable changes to the amp today.

First I replaced the 250 pF treble cap in the tone stack with the stock value of 500 pF. This resulted in a slightly thicker upper midrange tone. The green trace is with the 250 pF cap and the red trace is with the 500 pF cap.

Image

I also replaced the 47 pF silver mica plate to plate cap in the phase inverter with a 100 pF silver mica cap (actually, I used a 47 pF and 50 pF in parallel as that's what I had handy  ). This resulted in a reduction of some high end fizziness when the gain was cranked and a slight overall reduction in the hiss level. The overdriven highs are noticeably smoother.

Image

While I was inside the chassis, I also used the non-corrosive silicone sealant I bought to tack the power supply caps together and to tack down several wires that I didn't want to move after carefully routing them for minimum noise. No photos. It doesn't look that great, but no one sees it anyway.

Very nice thread!
How cool to build your own amp!
Any reason why you used silicone glue instead of hotmelt glue?
Here is a picture of a crossover I built using hotmelt and solid silver wire.

p.s. if you need any advice about your foot let me know.

I used non-corrosive silicon glue because it works.

I have a doctor to provide advice about my foot.

LOL! Yes I am fully aware that you have a doctor and appreciate your loyalty. You had so nicely provided advice for free I was trying to reciprocate. I am a board certified orthopaedic surgeon.

Here is the first cut at a schematic diagram of the amp I created using ExpressSCH (http://www.expresspcb.com/expresspcbhtm ... ftware.htm). Next time I get back inside the amp I will take measurements of the power supply and update the schematic.

nedorama turned me on to Amplates (http://amplates.com/) so I designed a new front panel and had Joe build it for me. It turned out great.

Much more professional looking.

When I get a chance, I'm going to take the amp to Action Music (http://www.actionguitar.com/) in Falls Church, VA and ask them to try out the amp and get their impressions.
