Well, my new amp kit from Weber finally arrived today. :D :D :D

To end the speculation as to what it is, the amp is a Weber Java. Here is the schematic and wiring diagram:

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/java_schem.jpg

https://taweber.powweb.com/store/java_layout.jpg

But of course, I am not going to build it exactly as the schematic shows. I'm going to build it as a Trainwreck Express clone basically following schematic A1a (page 3):

http://ampgarage.com/uploads/twfiles/sc ... eckxpr.pdf

If you are not familiar with Trainwreck amps built by the late Ken Fischer, here is their website:

http://www.trainwreck.com/

I became interested in these amps after seeing this demo on You Tube:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=pl ... IbgtOJjbg#

After doing some research, I found that the Weber Java is pretty darn close to an Express with a few easy changes.

I'll post some photos by this weekend when I do a complete inventory of the kit (I have already noticed that Weber sent the wrong front panel and possibly the back panel also).

It may take a while for me to build this one as I am having surgery on my right foot on Friday March 1 to repair a torn tendon. I'll be non-weight on that foot for 6 to 8 weeks. Normally I like to stand at my work bench, so I'll have to see if I can lower it to a sitting position.

Stay tuned. This should be a fun build. :D

Thanks, guys. I just saw my doctor today for a preop visit to go over things. Appears the surgery is more complex than I thought. I was under the impression it was going to be a simple tendon repair, but apparently my heel has to be removed and shifted toward the inside of my foot to line things up. :|

Anyway, I won't be walking for some time. But fortunately I'll be able to work from home over the next couple of months. I'm sure I'll figure out how to work on the amp during that time.

Pulled everything out of the box tonight to do an inventory of the parts. I confirmed that the panels were wrong (they sent the ones for their 6m45/JTM45 clone). I contacted Weber and they said that they would ship the correct ones on Monday. The chassis for the JAVA is the same as the 6m45, the front and rear panels just cover/uncover different holes. I also took a few photos of the kit.

Here is the head cab. Alligator black with white piping. The panels are black with white lettering. The kit comes with Marshall type knobs which I didn't want, so I ordered some different knobs which I ended up not liking either. So I ordered some good old white chicken head knobs from another vendor.

Image

Here is the head cab on top of the Crate 4x12 cab I picked up at my local Guitar Center for $100. I replaced all the cheap, skinny wiring with 16 gauge wire and soldered everything instead of using clips. The speakers are generic and sound it. I hope to replace them with something better later this year. Maybe for my birthday?

Image

Here's the small parts. Weber supplies 1 watt and up metal film resistors as well as ceramic high power resistors for certain applications. Ceramic tube sockets. Coupling caps are made for Weber which they claim are "Orange Drop" type. Whatever they are, they sound good in my 5F6A clone. The big electrolytic caps are also made for Weber and the smaller ones are Richey labeled. Guessing Chinese. Oh, well. Switches are Carling. Input jacks are the British style plastic ones, but I have ordered shorting Neutrik jacks from Weber. Also ordered more wire. One thing I learned from my 5F6A build was to have more wire than you think you need.

Image

The big parts. The chassis is aluminum (I beleive the 5F5A's was steel) and nicely made. Don't know where the transformers came from, but they are hefty hunks of iron. Circuit board is an eyelet type and a brass grounding plane is provided.

Image

Finally, here is a shot of everything all together on my work bench. It really is a fairly simple amp with not a lot of parts. I am going to build it without the master volume and I am not sure if I am going to use the speaker output impedance selector. I also am analyzing the tone stack. The JAVA comes with parts for your basic Fender/Marshall type tone stack. The Trainwreck tonestack is similar, but the values are different and make the frequency shaping very different.

Image

I ordered a set of JJ tubes (three 12AX7s, two E34Ls) from Eurotubes.

Surgery on my foot is set for this coming Friday. I'll be in overnight and come home Saturday. My doctor and I talked about pain meds and I told him I am allergic to Percoset and Vicodin. So he gave me a script for Dilaudid. I've had it in the ER (injection) for my migraines, so it should work really well. I'll be taking a week off, then working from home for the next 6 weeks or so.

I'm going to have to either lower my workbench or work standing with my right knee on a short chair. Could be interesting.

Stratele52...Enjoy the Pima Air Museum...great place to go if you are an aviation lover. Take plenty of pics...I spent a whole day there and could have spent another! Enjoy it.

Bluesky...sorry for that short hijack....Good luck with the surgury and like with your amp builds take your time...remember slow and steady wins the race on these type of things! Looking forward to this "Marshalesque" (forgive the term) build.
