A friend is giving me a great deal on the Super Sonic 60 1x12 combo in blonde/oxblood.

But what should I expect? I'm not a fan of loud amps, can this beast sound good a low volumes? Are there reliability issues? How usable is it for apartment use or home use? Any insights would be great!

Do a search of the forum. There are quite a few threads on problems that people have had with the SS series of amps.

60 watts wouldn't be my first choice for use in an apartment.

The Supersonic 60 is indeed a loud amp. It performs best on stage...when allowed to "breath"!!! I tried to confine an earlier model to home use. It went from "low" to "window shaking" in a fraction of a turn. Couldn't imagine using it in an apartment...

I think the success of that amp is going to be very subjective. My 100watt SS Twin sounds good at very low levels, but what my definition of good is, may be very different to others. A large number of new SS22 have a lot of problems which can take time to sort out. If the SS60 is anything like the SS22 then you may be in for some work. However if it is built like the SS100 then it should be rugged as a tank and have no issues. But if your friend is selling you this amp, has he not disclosed if there are any issues, or that he has already had them fixed?

Try before you buy.......

Yeah those valve amp volume controls are seriously non-linear when trying to dial a beast down into submission. For appartment use a 5-15watt should be more than plenty (and easier to tame).

I currently have a Fender Blues Jr Tweed with BillM mod's. I'm getting this SS 60 at nearly the same price I paid for the BJ.

I did read where one guy uses the effects loop like an attenuator...

If you are talking about adding a "volume box" in the effects loop, don't bother. Just acts as another master volume and is a waste in my opinion.

I'm talking about something like a Dr. Z Air Brake... Wiring the toggle switch to turn that on/off.

You may notice the effect of melting faces of those around you as you play through this amp!

Really though, I tried one once - didn't care for it. But, that speaks nothing to the quality or ability of the amp. Sounds like you're getting one of those "offer you cannot refuse" sort of deals. Worst case scenario: You don't like it and then you turn around and sell it for more than you paid for it.

Unless you're on a really big stage, the amp will never breathe unless you want to kill both yours and your audiences ears. Total overkill IMO.

The SS60 is really meant to be played loud, onstage. You can get good overdriven sounds on the Burn channel at low volumes. But you wont be able to crank the Vintage channel to get natural tube overdrive without blowing out the walls. One thing you can do to lower the volume is use lower gain preamp tubes, like 5751, 12AY7, 12AU7. Lots of info on the web on how to do these tube substitutions. Hope this helps.

Also, at low volumes the SS can sound "thin". Use a graphic EQ to boost the lows and it sounds much better.

While my "in home use" experience with the SS60 was less than optimal, I say you go for it given the deal. Have some fun experimenting with tubes, jumping the effects loop and adding an attenuator. Defnately break-in the V30 speaker as it sweetens up over time. I did the transfomer-buzz routine on mine. Never hurts to have a blonde around !!!

Not really sure how that would work.

Somehow, that post was meant for another thread. Someone has a Bassman clone with a polarity switch that doesn't do anything. I meant for the Dr. Z to be wirede up to turn it on/off...

Either way, looking at the demo, I don't see an on/off switch.
