In lieu of a 12AY7 you might try an NOS 5751 in the V1 position -- it's a skosh creamier than a standard contemporary 12AX7.

[Yep, it's the same with the new production 5E3 Deluxes as well. So far, the only new production AY7 I've seen is the EH 12AY7.

I didn't jumper at all. No doubt that the tones around 6 are awesome, however blunt force loud at that point. Fun, but useless in a practical sense (for me, anyway). My band would fire me if I tried to play that loud, and I get maybe an hour a week when the wife and baby are out of the house.

I thought someone else was making a new production 12AY7 besides E-H, but I could be wrong. I tried the E-H in my BDRI and did not like it, but good NOS 12AY7s can be had in the $40 to $60 range compared to NOS 12AX7s. See the link in my earlier post.

Actually, with the channels jumpered and a 12AY7 in V1, both volume controls on "6" is loud but not unbearably so. The amp is much more touch sensitive and can easily be controlled through picking and the guitar's volume.

Here is a graph of the frequency response of the normal and bright channels from the Keuhnel book. You can easily see how the two volume controls can be balanced against each other when using the amp in jumpered mode.

When I really want it to crank, I run both on "6", but for a mellower tone I like the normal on "6" and the bright on "4".

I run mine at about 3 to 3.5 at gigs. That's about as loud as I can run mine before being told to turn down by the sound man.

Just offering you some options for a different tone and better control over amp volume.

Just adding to this aging thread but after experimenting with the 12AX7, 12AY7 and the 5751 in my Bassman LTD RI, I wanted to add my observations.

12AX7 - This is the pick in ice pick sound. The normal tube now shipping with this amp and in my opinion, if you lean towards metal or hard rock, this ones for you.

12AY7 - Takes the ice pick sound out of the amp and gives it more of a natural tone, my favorite of the 3. Complex harmonics which are pleasing to the ear. As stated above, this tube moves the amp more towards the original sound of an early Bassman.

5751 - kind of like a low pass filter to remove the harsh highs. Definitely warmer, not as musical as the 12AY7. Changes the volume knob characteristic more than the others. Definitely a jazz vibe tonally.

If you like it modern go with the 12AX7 if you want to take the nasty edge off the amp go with the 12AY7 for sure.

Resurrecting this old dog :D

Just got my 59 Bassman LTD back from a tour with a good friend who was in love with the tone, however not the weight (hey were getting older)
I found the bias had not been checked in over a year and had drifted cold a bit

Here is what i did to make the notes drip with Golden honey sweetness

Rectifier: Real Mullard GZ34
V-1 Nice JAN Sylvania 12AY7
V-2 NOS Mullard 12AX7
V-3 NOS RCA 12AT7

The last change was V-3 , going to a 12AT7 smoothed the amp out like nothing else, well............ The 12AY7 in V-1 had a significant affect

All I know is I sure missed the old girl and glad to have some tweed in the house !!! 8)

I have had mine for 10 years and has been a fabulous amp. Sounds great with my strate, tele, Gretsch and les Paul. The only amp that holds a candle to it was my Super Reverb that I had sold. Great amp if you gig. Nothing like a good 4x10 amp. Simple but a wicked amp.More versatile than people think.
Great purchase for any collection.

I agree !
So much so that it has become my #1 and may indeed be my one and only, I absolutely love the tone since replacing preamp tubes, with all three 12AX7's in place its a bit harsh
12AY7 in v-1 and 12AT7 in V-3 take this amp to a new level of sweet tone.

Strum any open chord and let it ring out and you'll be in love
Yep its that good !
