OK. Finally bit the bullet and decided to get this critter to breath. It's a pretty straight forward task. Disassemble, remove the factory velvet grill cloth, replace with breathable grill cloth, replace speaker, reassemble, crank it up and enjoy!

Tools needed:
Phillips head screwdriver
7mm nut driver
Something to grip old staples and remove them.
Staple or tacking gun with 1/4 inch staples.
Grill cloth
Flat black paint. (may vary by amplifier batch)

This is best done with the chassis removed. There are two screws on the rear panel and two on either side of the box. Remove these and set aside. Unplug the speaker from the chassis. Slide chassis rearward and set aside on a stable surface.

The baffle can be removed with speaker installed, but since I am replacing it, I removed the speaker first. There are four screws, set these aside, remove speaker, set aside.

There are four long screws coming from the front of the amp through the baffle, These are somewhere between #6 and #8 with a star washer on the back and 7mm nut. SAE sizes don't work (at least on mine) so you will need the 7mm nut driver or tiny adjustable wrench (or pliers) at this point. I picked up a set of metric drivers just because you never know what you are going to run into now days, and tiny nuts like this are easy to crush with pliers.

There is a semi-transparent red paint on the screws so, being that it gets into the threads, you need to use something other than your fingers to hold these nuts.

Grill cloth removed.

That old grill cloth is officially trashed. Now I need to finish removing the old staples. Some came out rather easily, others, I'll need to fight with.

Making a trip to the hardware store today for a can of flat black paint. Why would they go to all the trouble of painting the rear black and painting the front white? WTF?

Well, more after painting and staple removal...

Turns out the front was natural.

OK. painted and new grill cloth. Great choice if I do say so myself. Thanks Arjay! You ship faster than those online retailers!

Back installed: That is one tight fit.

Sheer and Sexy

Whoa! What a difference in sound! And this speaker still needs breaking in. There doesn't seem to be any farting out on the low notes now. I think that restrictive curtain that was installed at the factory was causing a lot of back pressure.

Not quite a perfect alignment, but pretty darned close. My first cloth install since '68. This is the type of cloth Fender should have used. Not necessarily this color. But real grill cloth.

Time to break in this speaker now. Cheers! :D

That turned out right nice, Art!

And I'm glad all the upgrades were a significant sonic improvement.

Rawk on!

It's starting to sound a bit like a Fender. I'll have to wait til things get broken in before I start looking at that tone stack. I have to admit, that Oxblood cloth is perfect! Goes well with the Midnight Wine Strat as well.

I do have a few beefier Fenders for that Classic Fender tone though. :D

I've already played her thru the VT-15 cab.

But I am looking at a couple new bottles. It's all meaningless until the new speaker is broke in a bit. She's got a damn good set of lungs now.

Why don't you try acoustic transparent fabric. It's a breathable cloth. The function of the noise reducing fabric is looking great and allows the sound to pass through the acoustic substrate. it is the acoustic panel material rather than fabric absorbing sound.
