Hi everyone!

I own a 2006 Fender Hotrod Deville 212 and I need to connect it to 8 ohm speaker. Unfortunately unlike Deville 410, it doesnt provide an 8 ohm output. Looking at schematics (http://support.fender.com/schematics/gu ... ematic.pdf) I see that 212 and 410 uses same OT, that has an 8 ohm output, but in Deville 212 it is not connected.

My plan is this: I will add third output jack, which will be connected to 8 ohm tap of output transformer. When connecting 8 ohm speaker, i will plug an "empty" jack to one of spare outputs, so 4 ohm tap will not be grounded by internal switch of these jacks.

Has anyone experience with this "mod"? Or are there any problems i may encounter.

thanks!

Hi boksajak,

Simply connect the amp's main speaker jack to an 8 ohm speaker and be done with it. There is no harm using an 8 ohm speaker with a 4 ohm tube amp, you just will not get full power from the amp unless the impedance of speaker and amp match. You might not even notice a difference in power out, but you might like the sound with the mismatch.

You might want to look closely at the trans wires before you begin, as I'm not sure that the 8 ohm wire is there on the 2x12. Otherwise, what you've described seems feasible to me if the wire is there. BTW, if you add and use a third jack, plug the empty jack into the main speaker jack only, and not the ext speaker jack.

Thank you for your answer.

I tried your suggestion today and it worked without any problems, sound was great and I did not observe any drop in volume (Hot rod has plenty of power anyway).

btw. I checked the OT and there is an unconnected 8 ohm tap present (green wire - consistent with schematics), so I might eventually add the third output jack. I am going to replace volume pots for logarithmic ones, therefore when it will be open, I will add this jack as well.

Both the clean volume and drive control are already audio (logarithmic) taper pots. Only the master volume control is linear taper and there is no reason to change that to audio if you understand how to use a master volume amp.
