Hi all. Following on from a thread I had on this page a few days ago, I took the plunge and ordered a 65 TRRI. It's exactly what I was looking for and sounds fantastic. But I have a couple of questions and I'm not sure if it could indicate possible issues.
Firstly, with the amp volume on 5-6. The vibrato seems virtually ineffective till on at least 6 in the intensity dial? And even when turned right up to 10 is relatively ineffective. Is this normal? And it has the well known ticking issue?
Secondly, the overall amp volume is not the ear bleeding level I was expecting. Various owners have said that indoors the volume with 2 on the dial is very loud. And some report that 4 is loud enough for gigging level?
This is not the case at all with my amp. I can comfortably play indoors at a quiet level with the vol on 4. It doesn't start to get really loud till about 6. Both channels are the same.
Do I have a problem or are these amps known for variations in volume response etc?
Thanks on advance.

Have you had an audiologist check your hearing lately?

I do not ask in jest.

I've owned and played Twin Reverbs in some raucously loud classic rock bands for decades and even in a modest-sized club of 3500 or 4000 square feet in size, I seldom find the need to crank the amp above "4". The "6" (or higher) setting I'd only use for outdoor venues where my rig was not miked through a PA.

If your hearing is fine, then I suspect something is amiss with your amp. Best to have it checked at an authorized service center before your warranty expires.

As for your "trem tick" problem, that will never be fixed. EVER. The problem's roots are in the signal path used within the pre-amp to rout the signal in and out of V5 and its related components. "Back in the day", it was possible to fine-tune the tremolo by carefully moving wires about until some happy medium were struck. That's no longer possible with the re-issues due to the printed circuit board that's now used in lieu of the old-school hand-wired chassis. You live with the tick. Or not. Regardless, efforts to eliminate it in the re-issues will likely be fruitless.

+2

I used Twins a lot in the late 90's - 4 in an enclosed space was painful volumes. Something amiss with your amp, methinks!

I bought a 65 reissue twin & after a few months the number 1 channel volume was reduced dramatically. Turned out it was a loose wire on one of the tube sockets.....covered under warranty but still a pain in the arse.....

That happens more than anyone would like (or care to admit).

:(

I would make sure all tubes/valves are tight in their sockets before lugging that beast all the way back to the dealer or service center. If the problem persists, then make the trip.
