I have a HRD with major sound loss. I checked the input cable first, found it to be in the correct position. I then plugged into the the "power amp in" and found that I get some sound but it is still a significant loss of sound. I changed out the tubes with a set that are working great in my 71 Fender Bassman 50. Still significant power loss.

My questions are:

1. How much should I expect to pay to get this repaired?
2. Am I looking at a terminal problem?
3. Can I fix this myself with help of the electrician teacher at the local vo-tech?

Thanks guys!

1- I don't know , but if you find a good and qualified tech you are OK.

2- Terminal ? To put on garbage? Oh no it is a small / easy trouble for a qualified tech.

3- You must be shure all other tubes are good.

B+ voltage are they good ? You could have defective resistor in power supply or broken solder

You could have a defective resistor in Phase Inverter circuit . Just remove chassis from the amp , discharge filter capacitor an take some reading on resistor R53 R54. See schematic.

This amp have printed circuit ; not easy to work on.

Thank you,

I am going to have my local electrician check the resistors you mention and see what he thinks.

Electricians wire houses. They don't work on guitar amps. Find a qualified amp tech before your amp is destroyed.

Sorry I must have used the wrong term, this guy repairs robots which are a bit more complex than the board on this amp. If he looks and says no way it's going the three hours to the nearest tech.

Do robots have the potential of storing 450 VDC in them even after being unplugged?

Yeah, actually they have some rather large caps on them according to him, thanks to you I asked him that question to make sure, thanks!

So here is what we found. Our caps do not hold a charge...we plugged in the amp and took a reading and it was a normal reading, each varied but think in the 400s-300s. However, once we unplugged the amp we read the caps and the reading was no higher than 13 in any cap. Is this normal or do we have another issue other than a resistor?

Higher than 13 ??? 13 what ?

Reading 400s-300s : What do you mean ? Volts

Amp plug ; capacitor voltage should not move , Unplug amp , cap voltage drop; normal , it discharge on the amp

If you mean B+ voltage go up and down from 400 V to 300 V . You have a B+ problem ; bad solder , printed circuit broken , or short circuit.
Or your tester are defective, have bad contact.

I had no idea what you were talking about so I called my buddy up again. He said we were reading between 300-400 VOLTS on the caps. Then when we unplugged the amp the caps reading would drop to 12-13 VOLTS.

Ok now I understand , that is what I though;

Problem is there as write, you need to see a tech , not anybody in music store , be aware.

Okay, looks like this thing is going to make the three hour trip to the tech.

Will this be expensive? I only paid $100 for this amp and knew it was a bit of a pig in a poke.

Expensive ? I don't know I can fix my myself so I never need to see another tech . IMO it could cost you another $100 or less or more ?
Hard to say without seeing inside the amp .

3 hours drive , wow! far away this tech .

The only one near me is in myrtle beach SC. 3 hours away from my house. I am torn because there is a instrument and amp repair guy about an hour away but he isn't fender certified, he seems very reputable but I am still skeptical.

No need to be a Fender certified. Any tube amp tech can fix your amp. If he is qualified and honest go to see it.
