Hi All

The more drive channel on my hotrod has started emitting a warbly oscillating noise after about 40 minutes of play. I am using an attenuator/volume in the fx loop to allow me to drive the valves at lower volumes.

Any ideas?

No, you are not using an "attenuator", you are using a cheap potentiometer in a cheap case stuck in the effects loop. It will not allow you to "drive the valves at lower volumes". Pull it out of the loop and see if the problem goes away. You may have a microphonic tube that is showing up due to the fact that you have to crank the drive gain more to get any volume out of the amp with that volume box stuck in the loop.

In this case (HRDlx), the "master volume" does the exact same thing as having the volume box in the loop. Check the schematic and note that the "master volume" feeds the loop. The only difference is that using the volume box in the loop adds the op amp into the signal path of an otherwise "all-tube" signal.

The master volume controls the overall level in the drive/more drive channel. The volume box in series with the master volume serves what useful purpose?

Thanks Guys

I'm getting clear. Sounds like a valve problem and I'll replace if taking the cheap box out of the fx loop.

The volume box definitely gets a warmer tone out of the clean channel - so it's acting like a master for clean?

Yes. You can get some preamp "drive" on the clean channel at lower volume using the volume box in the loop.
