When I'm at my desk working on a score or an arrangement and playing, I use my VCXD. The problem is when I'm at my desk and not playing I would like the little guy to be quiet until he's needed again but he keeps on humming. Not as loudly as my Champ 600 but still loud enough.

Short of installing a standby switch, is there any other way to hush the little guy up?

If the only solution is a standby, does anyone have experience with this one which was suggested in another thread: Carling DPST Toggle Switch. Does the install require major surgery or is the procedure relatively straight forward?

Thanks & Cheers!
BM

Does a VCXD have a volume control?

LOL! That's a good one, Bill.

When I'm not playing through the amp the volume is turned all the way down and out of force of habit I do the same with the volume on the guitar. The hum is still there. Not as much as when the volume is turned up, but audible and somewhat of an anoyance.

Cheers!

Yeah, my C600 hums a bit with the volume turned all the way down, but I just ignore it.

You could add a standby switch. Easiest place would be in the B+ line from the power supply to the output transformer. Don't know it the line is a real wire or a PCB trace. It the latter, that could make things tricky. Of course, you have to locate the switch and drill a hole in the face plate or back plate. All you really need is an SPST switch of the proper voltage rating. In the end, I'm not sure if it would be worth the effort.

Salut stratele52. How difficult is it to make this mod? After it's done, is the amp totally quiet when the toggle switch is in the standby position?

I was thinking that if it's a simple matter of swap-the-switch by following destructions  on the wiring diagram then it may be something I would attempt with proper supervision and assistance from a friend who knows his way around electronics. If it's more involved then I would probably bring the amp to a qualified tech. However your admonition about this endeavor not being worth the effort gives me good reason to pause and reconsider. Could you elaborate on why you feel it may not be worth the effort.

[Sidebar: BTW, you were right about the red jewel light. :D ]

Cheers!

BM:

First of all the Carling DPST switch is unnecessary. It is designed to replace the toggle type power switch of an amp that does not have a standby switch, with a single switch that does both power and standby switching. As your amp has a rocker type power switch, you would have to unwire that switch and wire up the new switch for both functions. That may not be easy on a PCB based amp. All you really need is an SPST switch inserted in the high voltage line as I described.

As far as why it may not be worth the effort, being a PCB amp you may find that the circuits you need to modify are copper traces and not real wires. Depending on how parts are installed, you may have to cut the traces and solder wire to them to make either switch work. If it were me, I would simply turn the volume all the way down and ignore the slight hum (58, almost 59 year old ears don't work as well as they used to anyway. ) or just turn the amp off.

Thanks for the detailed explanation, Bill. It put things into the proper context and I now understand why my proposal is not a good idea.

Stratele, thank-you for the confirmation.

Cheers!
