What do you mean by "preamp tube options"?

Tube type?

Tube brand?

NOS? New manufacture?

What do you want to accomplish?

Why do you want/need to change tubes?/What do you have in them now?

Hot Rod or Blues Deluxe/Deville?

Which version? Original? III? Reissue?

I'd add to that list of key questions "Budget?"

Tube type? maybe 12at7 or 12au7/ what happens if i use a EL84 for preamp tube.

Tube brand? GT/Mesa right now

NOS? New manufacture? MIM deville / Blues jr MIA deluxe

What do you want to accomplish? not sure got the amps for cheap lets experiment.

Why do you want/need to change tubes? tonal experimentation. on the deluxe it seem i'm experience a little early break around 3 on the volume knob.

What do you have in them now? deville: GT 6L6 / deluxe: Mesa 6L6 / Blues jr Mesa EL84. GT 12ax7 in all.

Hot Rod or Blues Deluxe/Deville? hot rod

Which version? Original? III? Reissue? original

currently playing in a country band using the deluxe for rehearsal the deville is just to F***ING LOUD and use the blues jr at home.

See my discussion on tube selection for the BDRI on page 1:

viewtopic.php?f=13&t=80142&p=911995

Also applicable to your amps. :D

The EL84 wouldn't light up, no heater voltage as the socket ties pins 4 and 5 together which are the heater pins for the EL84. Since pins 1 and 6 aren't used on the EL84, you won't get high voltage to the EL84 on any pins, so you would probably have a low distorted sound if any sound at all. Be aware that just because a tube will fit in the socket, doesn't mean that it will work, and in some cases using the wrong tube can cause damage.

Experimenting can be fun, but no need to be haphazard about it. Search the forum for topics that you want to know about.

well thats why i'm asking questions first. the whole investment in all three amps is about $650. so if i blow something up that can't be repaired i just chalk it up to a learning experience, as long as its not me.

i have read some of the thread you posted bluesky, very informative. though not done yet i haven't seen any thing about changing power tubes. what changes need to be made to put in a set 6v6/EL34/KT88. it think maybe having the deluxe w/ 6L6 and the deville w/ 6v6/EL34/KT88 would really open up my tone pallet. oh i'm thinking about ordering the Billm mod kit for the blues jr. i did the tone stack mod and what an improvement. any thoughts on this would be appreciated.

The JJ 6V6S will work fine in the Deluxe/Deville. They will handle the high B+ values present in these amps. I believe the Groove Tubes and Electro-Harmonix 6V6 tubes will also work. Rebiasing will be required. Vintage tube will not handle the B+ of these amps.

If you are thinking about putting tubes other than 6L6GC or 6V6 type tubes in the Deluxe/Deville, you should buy

http://www.amazon.com/How-Hot-Rod-Your- ... gical+Tone

It has a complete section on modifying and changing output tubes in the Deluxe/Deville and talks about what works/what doesn't work/and required mods for different tubes.

1 thing i know i would like to do is reduce the power of the deville. i still want full power when needed but for the most part its just to much for a rehearsal situation. i would like to use both amps in stereo at rehearsal. installing some kinda 30w/60w switch would be nice.

Google is your friend. You can find plans on line to do that.
