I just bought a Deluxe VM and while I really like the distortion channel. The clean channel seems to have too much midrange for me. Does anyone know if a midrange control can be added to this channel or what the default midrange is on it? I thought I read a Deluxe Reverb has the mid set at 6. Is the VM set at 6 also? When I use a Rockman EQ that I own the sound gets alot nicer and more blackface sounding to me when I scoup midrange out. I like to be able to mod the amp to either have a mid control or at least be able to lower the mids by changing a cap or resistor.
thanks in advance for any info anyone can provide.
thanks
Patrick

Trying to install a midrange contol on the clean channel would be a complex undertaking. Where would you mount it?

Here is the schematic. R132 is the midrange resistor for the clean channel. You can experiment with different values to get the tone you want. You can also change R129 to a higher value to move the turnover point between bass and midrange to a lower frequency, thereby reducing the midrange somewhat.

Any mod is going to void the warranty if you bought it new. You would be better off to just use an EQ pedal.

I won't ever own a modeling amp of any type.

what value resistor would be good to set the mids at 2 or even zero? Also would a 10K pot in place of the resistor be a midrange control. It seems I've read that somewhere. I really like to turn the mids down when i play clean thanks

Tone stack calculations are extremely complex. You will have to experiment with resistor values to get the tone you want.

Or just download Duncan's Tone Stack Calculator from here - http://www.duncanamps.com/tsc/

Very nifty tool, comes in very handy when I'm messing about with pedal and preamp designs.

I use it all the time and normally recomend it, however in this case, it won't really answer the OP's question as it only provides total tone pot value and not the value that the pot is set to for a particular response. You could calculate the single resistor value if you knew the exact taper of the pot (the tone stack calculator gives pot setting in % of rotation) and thus knew how the resistance changes as the pot is rotated. Problem is, "audio" taper and "linear" taper pots are both used in tone controls and they respond very differently. Even "audio" taper pots vary in their actual taper curve shape.

If I take the resistor out and wire a 10K pot in it's place would that be the same as a midrange control would be on say a Twin Reverb?thanks

I doubt it.

Do you have any idea what the inside of that amp looks like? It's a PCB which makes modifications difficult. Where would you mount another pot where you would have access to it? Use an external EQ pedal instead of screwing up the amp and invalidating your warranty.
