Greetings,

I'm working on a green board Blues Jr. I've tightened up the tube sockets and cleaned them with contact cleaner, but the power tubes only make good connection when pressed slightly to one side. I am going to re-solder the sockets, if BillM ever sends the mod kit I ordered a few weeks ago (I'll have it apart then). Hopefully that will fix it, if not; does anyone know if the whole tube socket circuit board is available? I bought the amp cheap enough so I don't mind spending a little.

I know I can can buy the regular vintage type sockets and hard wire them to the board, eliminately the tube circuit board all together. That may be an option and then I could use shielded tube sockets for the 12ax7's... I guess I should ask if anyone has ever done that? I might try that if I decide to upgrade to 6v6 power tubes.

Thanks for all replies.

You would be hard pressed to find replacement PCBs for these amps unless you find a nonworking one or someone who has replaced the PCBs with a hand wired board. If you are lucky, you might be able to order one through a Fender service center.

Switching from EL84s to 6V6s will require replacement of the tube sockets and most likely a complete rebiasing of the amp or more.

You might consider just replacing the sockets, which are available at a few places. You could even use chassis mount types with flying leads to the board.

How thick is that "green" circuit board? I've done what you are thinking about... and it's a tedious job, where you really need to be careful not to damage the board or tracings. Pulling original sockets off a PCB board is not easy. And I use a really good de-solder sucker (The Hakko).

The thinner the board, the more likely the damage. I'd try sucking or wicking the old solder off --- and applying good tin/lead solder onto the connections. This usually does the trick.

If you decide to remove the sockets, try this. I snip each leg of the socket from the board. Then, heat the solder points and remove the excess lead stubs with a needle-nose plier. If you mount the new socket onto the chassis, use the SHORTEST leads possible from the new socket to the board. This minimizes inducing some oddball instabilities and injecting noise into the amp.

Good luck. Hope it's a simple fix.

Thanks for the replies. I've worked on circuit boards of all types for many years and I know how much board damage can be done when changing components (especially multi-pin components), that is why I ask if there were replacement tube socket boards available. Shimilou, that is a good suggestion about using chassis mount sockets and perhaps go directly through the board, I might be able to strip back the ribbon cable and solder directly to the sockets. I'd still like to find a new replacement board, that'd be mo-better.

Maybe a perf board? You can trim to the size that you need.

Just examples, they are available at lots of places.

Before I'd use a perf board the chassis mount sockets may fit in the existing holes. We'll see I hope re-soldering does the trick.
