I just retubed my hot rod deluxe with jj 6l6's and jj ecc803s because it was making tube noise. my problem is that v1 is microphonic no matter which tube i put in there, i have put 4-5 differnt tubes in v1 and they all are more microphonic the rest of the sockets. i put one of those spring loaded caps on the v1 tube which helps alot but i would like to fix this problem right

Hi Bezerker,

First, what are you calling "microphonic"? The V1 position will be more sensitive than other positions, and can produce sound when tapped, that's normal. Microphonic means that it will start to howl or feedback uncontrollably on its own. Is this what you mean, uncontrolled howl or feedback?

Which tubes are you using for V1? The long-Plate tubes like the ECC803, will often go microphonic very quickly in combos when used in V1. Maybe better to use a short-Plate tube for V1 in this amp. I just tried a long-Plate EH in V1 of my HRDlx, and it lasted about 15 minutes or so before starting to howl.

This is from thetubestore, under the description for the JJ ECC803.

"Note: Because this tube has a long plate structure it is susceptible to excessive microphonics and is therefore not recommended for use in combo amps or high gain stages. For these amps the JJ ECC83-S is a better choice."

Hmmm.

If it isn't the tube (try a short-Plate), then you might have a solder joint problem. Another possibility is a component or socket problem. With amp off and unplugged from electricity, I would inspect the solder joints for that socket closely while wiggling the tube in the socket, use a magnifier to get a real close look at the joints. Be aware of the voltages in the amp, even when off and unplugged. Check the capacitors to be sure that the voltage has drained to a safe level.

i checked the solder joints on the socket they all seem to be fine, several months ago i had to resolder one of the joints on the v3 socket, and had to the resolder a joint on the big 500v cap, also v1 is about 2x louder than the other tubes when u tap it.

Try a slightly lower gain tube, like a 5751 or 12AT7 and see what happens. There maybe a bit too much gain and/or the position is setup too hot for that 12AX7.

Good luck!
