Need some advice as to where to find a good capacitor for my DRRI. I need to replace the capacitor at C7 and possibly C10. If someone could suggest the correct value for the capacitor at C7, that would be groovy. I opened the thing up and removed the capacitor at C10, but damaged the one at C7, which now needs replacing. As well, I was thinking of installing a .5pf cap at C10, but don't know where to buy the replacement parts, nor exactly what to ask for when I do. I have read that the capacitor at C7 is 250pf, and the original was a small green ceramic disk. Suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I'm new to amp modding, but do have enough on the ball to know to bleed the caps and put one hand at a time into the thing. Thanks in advance.

Here's the schematic. Have at it.

Given the fact that you somehow managed to destroy a component that is nowhere near the one you were attempting to remove, I'd say you have no business putting your hands inside an amp.

Thanks for the link. The schematic was quite helpful. Actually, the C7 capacitor is quite near the C10, I accidentally clipped it instead of the C10, though I checked and double checked, etc., before clipping the wrong one. When I opened the thing up I did so cognizant I might destroy it, which I haven't, but there's nothing gained if there's nothing risked. I'm actually inspired to try to build a simple amp, now. Nonetheless, I'm ready to buy a new amp if I destroy the old one, which is only two years old.

senggedorje, where did you get the "mod" to clip C10? Many of these pico-farad caps are in circuit board amps, to compensate and stabilize issues when using printed boards versus tagboards or P2P circuitry.

These MUST be 1KV or higher rated caps. Ceramic is the best. You need to clip a heat sink device onto the cap's body when soldering, to avoid thermal damage.

If the treble tone control doesn't cut the mustard, try "browner" tone or lower gain tubes. Of maybe pedals in front of the amp, which have tone controls of their own. I feel clipping out some of these caps without knowledge of what their function was in the first place, is kinda risky-- at best.

I think it's fairly common knowledge on the internet that this is the bright cap on the Vibrato channel. I did order a replacement cap consistent with the schematic, 250 pF 1000V, so all should be well. Thank you for the kind advice, I do appreciate it. I have the clips to use while soldering, and will be sure to use best practices. I ordered a silver mica capacitor which some believe are good.

I really like doing things for myself and am not afraid of making a mistake. And, I can afford to replace the amp, as I think I stated above. The consensus is that C10 being removed will darken up the tone without harming the amp, so I'm givin' it a try.

Thanks!

If you get a silver mica cap --- get a good quality one. With proper voltage rating. Some off-shore brands have been noted for early failure. Esp leaking DC voltage, which can cause damage to downstream components.

Good luck with your mods.

Cold but true!

try amplifiedparts, or watts

http://www.amplifiedparts.com/products/capacitors

but if not familiar with the guts of a tube amp...you can permanently fry in an instant! :( and girls don't like dating toast

read up on the stuff...or if you are experienced...leave the weed for after the repairs/modding..but what fun is that?

Thanks to everyone who replied. I got the new capacitor installed and it sounds good as new. Well, minus the capacitor at C-10, which with that one removed, the amp is more overdrive pedal friendly. It didn't seem to darken the vibrato channel so much, removing that cap, but it did get rid of that hideous screechy noise in the top end when the OCD pedal is fully engaged.

I appreciate everyones patience with a rookie. It really wasn't difficult, though there were a few moments when I was about to pull my hair out.
