I love that my new Blues Junior goes to 12. Does the volume numbering have anything to do with the Spinal Tap Movie?

Have you ever seen an original tweed Fender amp???

They were built some three decades before that "rockumentary".

A great many Fender amps go to 12. But really, considering that 1 is the lowest position on the knob and there is no 0, they actually still only go to 11.

Hi nsturtevant and welcome to the forum!

Fender amps that go to "12" or actually to "11" as shimmilou explains, have been around much longer than the movie Spinal Tap. The "goes to 11" is one of my favorite scenes.

I used to play at jams with a guy who was always drunk off his $@!. Good player and it was a shame that he was never coherent because I could have learned a lot from him. One night the following happened and I had to pinch myself to make sure I was not dreaming.

He comes up to me and says "Hey, would you like me to help you adjust your Blues Jr so it will sound great?" I replied "yes I would like that"

So here was his procedure:
1. Play an E Chord
2. "Okay lets turn the bass all the way up"
3. Play the E chord again and a blues lick
4. "Okay..." he reaches down and turns the treble all the way up
5. Play a blues lick and another chord
6. "Ah hah..." he reaches down and turns the mids all the way up
7. Play another lick and a bend
8. "Allrighty then..." and he pushes in the mid boost switch
9. Play some more licks and chords
10. "Sweet!..." turns up the master volume all the way

Well this went on for a painful, but funny 20 minutes and when he was "done" all the knobs on my amp were turned to max and the mid boost was pushed in. He was looking over his "adjustments" and admiring his handy work when he told me "you should come and play through my rig if you really want to hear what a guitar should sound like". I went over and saw his amp, I can't remember what it was but noticed that the knobs were marked off from 1-10. I jokingly told him that I appreciated his offer but that my amplifier was obviously superior to his (this was not the case, like I said I was joking). He stumbled over to me and slurred, "what do you mean by that?". I pointed out that his amp only went to 10, but that mine went to 12. The look on his drunk face was priceless. He spent the next 10 minutes walking back and forth between his amp an mine scratching his toasted head. I could not hold down the beer i was trying to drink because I spent the next 30 minutes laughing my $@! off.

It was then that I discovered how much fun I was going to have playing guitar and jamming with drunk musicians.
