Hi there,

I've just bought a blues deluxe reissue (new from GC). Very pleased with it - but had a question about the clean channel:

I was quite surprised that the clean channel starts off pretty clean (at say 1 and 2) but after about 4 it starts too break up into a fully distorted sound - it's also pretty darn loud at this point too. I was just wondering if this is how it is supposed to be ? I'm fine with it - I guess I was imagining the sound to stay 'cleaner' alot further up the volume range.

Is this drive/distortion on the clean channel how it should be ? Just wanting to make sure I don't have a problem.

Cheers

George.

Yes, it is perfectly normal. In my opinion, the stock 12AX7 in V1 provides too much gain causing complaints about sudden jumps in volume and generally to early an onset of distortion. See the post on tube selection for the BDRI in my thread on the mods that I have made to mine. Also read the post about proper bias for the output tubes. Fender biases this amp way too cold.

Bill,

Thanks for the clarification. At some point I might get to tinkering - your extensive post on tubes and biasing is very interesting - I've never done such stuff (didn't even know you really could)..... for now, I'm just getting to know the amp - I just wanted to be sure the drive/distortion on the clean channel was normal.

Cheers

George.

Put a Eminence GB 128 speaker in there you wont regret it! much smoother OD channel and you can use the bright switch with humbuckers in the #2 output little more clean head room also. Im running a Bogner XTC red pedal for higher gain and a les lius for lower gainbut the stock OD works as good for lower gain

Not sure why I perceive a difference, but my clean channel stays quite clean up through volumes louder than I every play (including gigs). Not the pristine clean of, say a twin, but pretty clean. As for the "drive" channel, I wish it had just a little more 'dirt' to it, but then it is a blues amp.

As for the use of an Eminence speaker. Many Emi's have greater sensitivity meaning you get more volume at the same setting. So, for the same volume, the amp's volume setting will be lower giving more headroom if that's what you're after.

The stock speaker in the standard issue BDRI is an Eminence Legend. I believe it is a Legend 1258.
