I am purchasing a Fender Hot Rod Deluxe. Currently I am playing a Guild S-100, I am looking for suggestions for tone settings to get the most out of this amp. I am will also be purchasing a Vox AC15 and thinking of using the fender for my "Crunch" amp. However, this may change. I am open to any suggestions.

I play mainly rock, nothing to heavy in the distortion area, but I do like some crunch.

The best advice I can give is to just play with the knobs until it sounds the best to your ear. That is the very thing I did with mine. Then just understand the tone will change when you get in another room.

Hi guildguytimes3,

Agree with Rob. So many unknown variables, tubes, bias setting, guitar, individual taste, etc.

My HRDlx almost certainly has different tubes than your stock tubes, and I use different guitars than you use. Right now I have a GE 5751 in V1, GT 12AX7-C in V2, GT 12AT7 in V3, and GT 6L6 S output tubes with a 10 rating. Yours will likely have three 12AX7 Sovteks in the preamp, and output tubes will probably be either Sovtek 5881 or Chinese 6L6. I mainly use input 2 for a bit more mellow sound, while input 1 is louder. Also, I reset the bias in my amp much hotter than it comes from the factory. These are the settings that I mostly use, but I do adjust the treble, bass and mid a little for different guitars, and when I experiment with different tubes. You could use these settings as a starting point and adjust to suit your ears. After you get your amp and check it out, you could come back and post feedback on the sound, then we might want to discuss the bias setting.

+1

I can also add that the sound will change depending on the guitar/pups. For example I tried Shimmilou's suggested settings on my HRD which is running with JAN Philips 5751 in V1, V2, and a Mullard 12AT7 in V3. The settings work fine on the clean channel but I had to push the Drive all the way up to 10 or so and do some other tweaking in order to get the same amount/quality of crunch from my FSR AmStandard with C69 pups than for my AmDeluxe with N3 pups.

HTH

Cheers!
BM
