been taking my main gigging amp to rehearsals lately cause I love it that much but we jam for about 4/5 hours and then I turn it off and it sits for about 10 mins still pretty warm and then take it out into -6 celsius weather to load into my friends car.. is this bad ? should I avoid taking my combo to jams and just use the marshall there ? I don't wanna damage this amp since its my only gigging amp

Millions of Fender amp owners have been doing that for decades without incident.

You'll be fine.

All will be fine, they're built to be working tools. Most of my amps have suffered far worse than that over the years.

Correct.

As with any vacuum-tube device, the amp shouldn't be shaken, dropped, or otherwise jarred. And if possible, bring the amp indoors after use as soon as possible. I alway unload my pickup after an outing that involves guitars and amps even though the vehicle is garaged.

You shouldn't have problems with -5 to -10 Celsius temps. If you really want to be anal, look for US NOS mil spec tubes. These are designed to function in -35 to -50 Celsius conditions that, say, a B-52 or ICBM would "see."

Plus, they tend to sound pretty good, for a long time. Funny how that worked out. FWIW... many good, recent issued Russian and Chinese tubes are surplus from their military stock.

Now that the secret is out, check out thetubestore.com for their "Preferred Series", excellent tubes.

not sure what tubes are in my amp, there are 3 12ax7s and 4 EL84s in my 900 dollar Traynor YGL2 Class A Cathode Biased combo

the traynor rep said these types of EL84 amps usually last longer tubewise and are more durable which comforts my worrying mind lol

Logieberra, not really sure what The Traynor rep meant. But, Class "A" amps tend to be harder on output tubes (EL84, in this amp), than those Class AB and B amps. This is because the output tube are running close to full potential wattage (prolly around 80%) -- at idle (no volume, no input). it's the nature of Class "A" amps.

Class AB1 (even with "hot" biasing) --- has half of the output tubes around 25-30% potential wattage, any given time. In other words, half of the EL84 are near 25% during the sine wave cycle. Or biased to around 60-70% full potential wattage, at idle.

I know this sounds like gobby-gook. Maybe this link (not Zelda type), may help:

http://www.tpub.com/neets/book7/25e.htm

In my epxerience, any Class "A" amp needs good output tubes. The best for your amp (of the current issued ones) is the Reflektor made 6N14P-EV (aka: Sovtek EL84M). This is truly a 7189 (mil spec) tube. Made to take Class "A" conditions (esp the heat issue),

I've been using them in my Matchless for years and years. No problems.

HTH!

Logieberra, the 7189 is 100% compatible with any EL84 amp. One note about "matching." It is NOT necessary for the health and life of the amp (I don't care what the rep sez-- :D ) to have "100%" matched out[put tubes. Heck in the 1950-60, no one even knew what the term meant. Of course, tubes were built to better standards, in those days.

Tone-wise, if you are within 10-15% between each tube, you'll be fine. As they age differently, anyhow. Strong testing, QUIET tubes are way more important for good life and performance. The seller should list mA output and quietness as a criteria and not just "matching." I mean, what is the good, if the tubes match, but test at 50% ?

Just my 2¢ worth, of 2¢.

alright thanks a bunch I will save these links, I don't need new tubes really since I just got the amp but back ups are good for a gigging guitarist right and I could always switch to these better tubes and keep the stock traynor tubes in there as backups.. next month!

Congrats on the gig and let us know how it goes!

For me, it's always the next gig I'm most excited about. We are changing our band around; last gig with the previous drummer was December 13th and looking forward to rebuilding the band and getting back out there by March. Can only deal with a drummer with no dynamics who can't keep time for so long.

Just think of it this way, your tubes are now cryogenically treated which should make them sound better and last longer...........
Sorry, I just couldn't resist.
