Hi everyone, I'm new to the Fender forums, and even newer to do it yourself amp projects. I own a Blues Deluxe Reissue, and am in the early stages of research and planning for a 2x12" extension cab project. I understand that the impedance of the speakers must match (looking at some Celestion Vintage 30s) and the total impedance of the cab must match the power output of the amp of 40W at 8 Ohms or 4 Ohms at 5% THD, which brings me to my question: is there any advantage/disadvantage or tone difference in running the amp at 4 Ohms versus 8 Ohms?

Any help and additional info is appreciated. Thanks!

Hi BuddhaJones,

Using an 8 ohm ext cab will give a matched impedance, meaning you get the most power from the amp. As for the best sound, that is subjective and you might or might not like the sound of a 4 ohm ext cab better. The impedance of amp and cab don't have to match except for getting the most power from the amp, but stay within a 2 to 1 ratio for any impedance mismatch.

Don't confuse impedance (ohms) and power handling (watts), they are completely different and unrelated. The power handling capability of the ext cab must be at least as much as the power that the amp can produce. Typically you want the ext cab to have a higher power rating than the amp to prevent blowing the speakers.

For a 2x12 cab, using two 16 ohm speakers in parallel will be 8 ohms for the cab, while using two 8 ohm speakers in parallel will be 4 ohms for the cab. Using the ext cab with the internal amp speaker is explained in the manual as to impedance total.

I have a 2 x 12 ext. cab I got from Siesmic Audio with two 16ohm Texas Heats and it sounds great. I installed C Rex in the Blues Deluxe as well.
