Hi guys,

I have a Fender HRD III, nice amp, but I keep hearing that it is suppose to be almost too loud. I recently got my hands on a used Peavey Classic 30 and it seems to be almost twice as loud as the HRDIII. I'm wondering if there's something wrong with my HRDIII. The strange thing is that I don't hear anything wrong with it's tone, just the volume.

Are there any tips or things I should look out for?

Thanks

Orlando

Ummmm, what channel are you using and what are your settings on the HRD III? You have given us no information to go on.

Differences in volume control taper and speaker sensitivity can easily account for volume differences between two different and unrelated amps.

Hey, thanks for the reply.
I'm talking about the clean channel, it just seems like with the Classic 30 I really don't need to push it that hard to beat the drummer or play pretty much anywhere within reason un-micked, while with the HRDIII it's a real struggle, it gets distorted by vol. 5/6 and unplayable and farty by vol.7.
When put them side to side, by the time I reach vol. 3, the Classic 30 is already way louder.

Again thank you for taking your time to help.

I would suggest checking the power tube bias on the HRD III. Fender sets them way to cold.

Keep in mind the Peavey uses four EL84s in the power amp while the HRD III uses two 6L6GCs. The amps are going to sound very different. Don't know what speaker is used in the Peavey. The Fender probably uses an Eminence.

Once again, thank you for your reply.
I'll get someone to look at it, I'm sure it'll be the smallest thing.

Did you buy it used ? someone could have changed the tubes to tame it a little. That's what I did to mine, it was just too loud.

No, I've got it new.
Would it be worth changing the tubes?

I thought you wanted it loud? Get the bias checked before you do anything.

The Peavey Classic 30 is loud! I've gig with a guy that has a DRRI and the C30 that I was working on just blows the doors off his stone stock DRRI. Redoing the filter caps and speaker (to Weber ceramic 12F150), plus some primo CBS 6V6GTY --- and rebias --- put the DRRI into the range on the Peavey (up to "8").

I was using my ES-335 (1962 with zebra pups) through the Peavey. He had a Custom Shop 1992 Strat (with Duncan alnico --- I forgot the specific types). No pedals.

The Peavey had Reflektor 6N14P-EV (EL84M) and Tungrams ECC83s. Stock 30 watt Celestion ceramic speaker.

That Peavey was loud, in the range of Vox AC30 with top boost. The owner of Peavey wanted a Celestion Vintage 30 speaker. Which made the amp crazy LOUD and Bluesy.
