I have a Blues Deluxe Reissue that I've owned for two years. It has stock everything on it. Guitar is not my primary instrument, so I don't use the amp that much. I've played through it at a dozen or so shows. It's sounded great up until the other day when it started feeding back regularly, sometimes even when nothing was being played through it. Not a screamy feedback, but a growing, dull hum kind of feedback. I switched cables, guitars, but continued to have the same issue.

Hoping someone has had some experience with this and can offer help/solutions/ideas about what maintenance is required. I haven't taken it anywhere to get looked at yet.

Also if it is something that requires maintenance I'm taking suggestions for good shops in the Los Angeles area.

Thanks very much in advance.

Are you using an electric guitar thorugh the amp? Just asked because big hollow-body string instruments can cause any amp to howl.

If it's an electric guitar, you prolly have a microphonic tube. Remove the metal tube covers. Plug in guitar. Flip on amp. Set volume to 3 or 4. Now, GENTLY tap each tube with the eraser end of a pencil. The microphonic tube(s) will make a pronounced ringing noise. This tube will need to be replaced.

Post your results. Or lack of. There can be other component that cause feedback.

Thank you I will try that.

I've used three guitars through it with the same result - a solid body American Strat, a semi-hollow Tele Thinline reissue, and a cheap acoustic with Dean Markeley ProMag acoustic/electric pickups.

As long as it isn't a standup bass or some such instrument... the howling is prolly amp induced, from a loosey-goosey tube. Tap test should find it.

Good hunting!

Just FYI, the BDRI does not have metal tube covers. There is a foam pad that surrounds V1 and V2 to absorb vibrations, but that's it.

I opened the back and tapped all the tubes as discussed, but none of them made any ringing sound. I heard a little crackle through the speaker during this, but it didn't seem to be triggered by touching the tubes. At first the fifth tube sounded a little metallic when I tapped it (similar to the sound you get from a burnt out lightbulb where the filament is destroyed), but the sound was ever so slight.

As a side note there didn't seem to be any covers or anything protecting the tubes, foam, metal or otherwise.

What do you think my next step is?

Try some contact cleaner on the tube pins and sockets. And swap 12AX7s around from socket to socket and see if this helps.

Good luck!
