Hey guys. I am in the market for a good sounding amp I can move around easily. I love my 68 super but it weighs quite a bit. The three amps I'm thinking about are a Super Sonic 22, a Custom Vibrolux, or a Deluxe Re Issue. I know I like the Deluxe, but I have never played either of the other two amps. The SS22 sure gets a lot of bad press, but it seems like it should be a good little amp. I really don't mind using pedals for OD, any insights or experience you can share is appreciated.

Oh yeah I want to keep it under the $1000 mark.

Of those three, it is no contest, get the Deluxe Reverb. I played a Custom Vibrolux recently and didn't get very excited by it. It was ok, but nothing special and it was a bit noisy. As for the SS...they have a reputation for being quite noisy, so pedals may present an issue for you.

FWIW

I agree the deluxe reissue is the best of the three mentioned. Great sounding amp that takes pedals well and being 40watt has the ability to be load when you need it.

Did you mean the Deluxe Reverb Reissue or the Deluxe Reissue?...I would not recommend the Deluxe Reissue. Fender has had too many QC issues with these amps. My recommendation was for the 65 Deluxe Reverb Reissue.

Let me be ridiculous and suggest a SuperChamp X-2 if you can get to a store and try one out. If not, then perhaps not. I have an original deluxe reverb. Not sure of the exact year, but I bought it at a studio sale for 100 dollars in 1975? It was many years old then. A new one was going for less than 200 then. That said, the super champ is a worthy companion to it.

You can ignore me. I won't be offended.

I played the Supersonic 22 at the store along with the Deluxe Reverb Reissue. Both good amps. DRRI does what it does the best, but SS22 is more versatile.

+1 except for lack of tremelo

I'm in rather the same quandry myself.
I've auditioned the SS-22 and liked it a lot. The problem I had with it was that when playing rapid-fire notes, they seemed to blur together at times even without reverb. The articulation didn't seem speedy enough. That was my experience - yours may be different.
Even though it's only 22 watts, it is very loud.

Also I tried a Blues Deluxe RI and ran a Fulltone OCD into the dirty channel. Looks awesome in the tweed. It sounded pretty good, but again, the blurring thing happening with that amp as well. Still thinking about that one though.

The clean channels on both were very nice - I think I liked the clean on the 22 a bit more - perhaps less "spikey". I'd love to try an SS-60 but no place around here has them in stock.

As for the Deluxe Reverb RI, is that a mostly a "clean" amp? If so, then pedals all the way. Wish it were 40-60 watts... I'll have to check that one out I suppose...

According to Fender, the SS22's clean channel was built on the DRRI's "platform", so expect very similar sounds (plus tremelo on the DRRI). It is clean, but will give Bluesy OD, pwr tube breakup @ higher volume. IMO you will need OD/Distortion pedals for sound variety.

Thanks, I found this comparison with a Deluxe Reverb (not sure if RI) using a Fulltone Plimsoul to the SS-22:

My big issue with the DR is that there seems to be no effects loop.

I've tried the HRDeluxe and found it to be too shrill sounding for me. Do they make a 40-60 watt Deluxe Reverb type amp with an effects loop? Otherwise, it may be that a Bassman may be the answer for me since I've heard that it doesn't break up until almost full volume. So even if it doesn't have a loop, I probably wouldn't be distorting post-distortion type effects (that much at least).

I you like the HR deluxe otherwise maybe see if you can get your hands on an Emerald edition? It has an Eminence Cannabis Rex speaker in it. Smoooth.

Interesting, I've been reading up on that speaker since your post.
I think that I find some o fhe Fenders to be what is referred to as "spikey". The Rex sounds like it might be more in line with what I would want. I know the SS-22 has that Lightning Bolt speaker in it.

Good luck. I have a Lil Buddy and a Red White and Blues, both bought to cure spikey Fender amps. Big Eminence fan here.

Don't know if the Beam Blocker is any good:

I know that others have posted that they like it...

I presume that some speakers are more "spikey" than others.
