Hello, I'm having problems with my Twin Reverb making a loud noise when I cut the amp off. It only does it if I use it for a good while without shutting it off. I've noticed the top of the amp does get pretty warm. I took the footswitch out because I believe the wire has a short in it and it did better for awhile but then started back. I don't know if this could be a tube problem or what. Everything else works fine just when I flip the power button off it acts up for a good bit and will sometimes hum a little more than usual. I don't know much about fixing amps so please keep the answers kind of simple. Thanks!

Hi Mattblackwell,

When turning the amp on, do you first turn on power, warm up, and then the standby switch?
When turning the amp off, do you use the standby switch first, cool down, and then the power switch?

This don't make amp squeal with any swicht off first.

I know, but if a bad tube, it could be premature failure caused from not using standby.

Is this something us SCX2 owners can look forward to because of no standby?

A standby switch is typically beneficial to nearly any tube amp, and can help to extend tube life. I put a standby switch on my BJr for example. The larger the amp, the more beneficial to have and use the standby. For amps without a standby, once turned on, leave them on as long as possible, even all day. The heating and cooling of amp components, including tubes, can be the cause of problems. If you can heat up slowly, and cool down slowly, such as when using the standby properly, it's better for the tubes than slamming cold tubes with high voltage.

Thank you, Shimmilou. Perhaps, at 15 watts, my X2 will not age so fast. I will keep it on until done for the day.

Perhaps. Leaving it on is maybe your best bet.

For power ON the use of stanby switch is a must . IMO to go OFF , does'nt mater

You might be right stratele52. IMO, you get the same benefit of the standby when powering on and off, which is slower temperature change, whether cold to hot or hot to cold. The environment probably makes a difference also, as long as we don't use the amp inside a refrigerator, it's probably OK. 8)

I believe the squeal was coming from bad tubes. A friend of mine changed the tubes around and the problem went away but another problem came up so I've just decided to order all new tubes.

If you change output tubes, be sure to set the bias properly for the new tubes.
