Has anyone added the Hot Rod Deluxe 112 Enclosure as an extension cabinet to the Blues DeVille?

The Fender blurb says: "It fits neatly under the Hot Rod Deluxe and Blues Deluxe combos" but doesn't mention the Blues DeVille.

Fender has it listed as 23.5" width, but Sweetwater has it listed as 22.5" so if Sweetwater is correct, then that would mean that it is narrower than the 23.5 DeVille combo.

So is the Blues DeVille actually wider than the 112 enclosure?

Has anyone done this? It would add some bottom to the 4-10s of the DeVille, yes?

Thanks,

My HRDlx 1x12 ext cab is 23.5" wide. The stock Celestion G12P80 in the cab is definitely very bass heavy, not much high-end at all. I changed the Celestion to the Gold Label from my BJr, same speaker as in the HRDlx amp, and I like the sound much better. I'm certain that the stock speaker in the HRDlx ext cab will add a lot of low-end to your amp, or any amp for that matter.

In my opinion, if you need a 12" extension cab to add bass to a Blues Deville, you don't have your tone controls set properly. The four 10" speakers in a Blues Deville will move more air (314 square inches of total surface area) than two 12" speakers (226 square inches of total surface area). The Blues Deville has the approximate equivalent of two 12" speakers and one 10" speaker.

shimmilou, thanks for the size confirmation!

bluesky636 - good to know about the 4-10s. I always assumed that the overall sound would be brighter due to the 10" cones.
Of course adding the 112 cab probably would add even more air movement and get the BDV higher off the ground for slightly better projection, yes?

As shimmilou mentioned, the extension cab with stock speaker can be very bass heavy. I don't have that cab but I have another cab with a Celestion 12P-80 that I use with my 5F1 modded Champion 600. Sitting on the floor, that cab was pure mud in the bass. I cut about 1/3 of the back panel out of the cab to make it an open back and it is now perfect. The Blues Deville is capable of a massive amount of bass. I would try adjusting the tone controls before investing in an extension cab that may turn out to be unusable with it.

Thanks! Good to know. I still haven't been able to audition a DeVille yet but hope to soon. I just assumed that the extension would be an option.
If the DeVille by itself is enough then that's even better.

My objective with the DeVille would be to use pedals with it since it doesn't have a high-gain channel. I've tried the SS-22, but rapid-fire legato notes seemed to run together without enough definition. I'm not sure if that was due to the speaker or the circuit design. Otherwise, the 22 was very nice. Maybe changing the speaker would make a difference. I would also like to try the SS-60 which I believe has the Celestion Vintage 30.

Thanks again!
MrM

Really, the HRDvl 4x10 doesn't get great low-end, it's really tight. I bought it for use with a bass guitar, and was disappointed, maybe partly due to the open cab, great for guitar though. I presume that the BDvl 4x10 will be the same.

If you compare the schematics of the Hot Rod Deville and Blues Deville Reissue, you'll find that the HRDeville uses some different values for both coupling caps and cathode bypass caps in the preamp than the Blues Deville Reissue does which I think would account for the difference in bass response. The s l o p e resistors in the tone stack are different too which will have an impact on the upper bass/lower mids tone. Overall, the preamp designs are very different beween the two.
