A friend purchased a used '08 Fender Super-Sonic 60 Combo amp. He said he was playing it thru the burn channel and after about 20 minutes there was a loud (really loud) crackling sound then a continuous screaming high pitch. He turned it off, waited a while, turned it back on and the clean channel was fine but nothing was coming out of the burn channel. When I looked at it, V3 (V3A and V3B gain stage) was glowing a soft blue. I surmised what he may have heard was the tube going out. I had a spare 12AX7 that I popped in and the burn channel came to life and all seemed good. Considering the age of the amp and that the Groove Tubes where probably the originals, he opted to re-tube the amp with a new complete set of JJs. Biased that power tubes and it sounded great.

After he got the amp home, he said he was playing it for about 10 minutes and he heard the loud crackle again, followed by the continuous screaming high pitch, and turned it off immediately.

When he brought it back over to me, I checked the tubes and all seemed to be glowing normally. Powered it up and everything seemed fine. I have been playing thru it for an hour or more and I cannot recreate the loud crackle, however I have been able to get an unsustained high pitched squeal buy wiggling the input jack with a guitar cable. Tightened up the nut on the jack, shot in a little Deoxit and could not create the noise. Then I wiggled the power switch on the back and got the unsustained high pitch briefly. Tried over and over again but could not get it to come back.

Grasping at straws here! Any ideas what to look at next?

Thanks, Steve
