Set to wrong impedance? Or better yet, wrong connections?

No, I don't care to try and guess what the problem was. Whatever the problem was, it goes back to a statement I made in an earlier post:

Given that you have replaced all of the tubes with new ones and the problem was not solved, I would say that tubes are not the issue. The only symptom you mentioned was a loss of power. Without a better description of the problem or other symptoms and lacking any measurements, it is impossible to make a diagnosis on-line.

Unless sufficient detail is provided regarding the operating conditions and configuration of the equipment having a problem is provided, any sort of a diagnoses is nothing more than a guess, and a not very educated guess at that. I have lost count of the number of people that post here and say "My amp just died. How do I fix it?" I would say that you were probably operating the amp in a non-standard manner when the problem occured. A full description of how the amp was being operated would have saved us all a lot of time and probably resulted in a solution. Anyway, I am glad the problem has been taken care of.

So you must have changed your speaker and it was the wrong ohm.

A couple of you guessed correctly. I wanted to play the guessing game because I figured you all had seen this problem a bunch and would spot it when I wrote "It cost nothing to fix."
Well, the amp is a little loud for my practice area, so I wanted to maybe attach an attenuator. I felt around in the back and found that the speaker would easily unplug. When I plugged it back in I put it in the wrong jack. I assumed that they were the same, but my tech printed out the schematic and now I see that they are not. Easy fix, and one that had occurred to me and I didn't try it because I could see the wiring to the jacks and they looked perfectly parallel. Big dumbass mistake and kind of embarassing, but thanks everyone for the help. As far as wasting anyone's time goes, I thought I was preventing that by just taking it to the shop. Sorry. Now if you will all excuse me, I'm gonna swallow my pride and go jam!

Oh, and rather than spend 300$ for an attenuator I bought one of those pots that hook up to the effects pedals and turn down the signal before it gets to the amp. It seems to work pretty good. Anybody hear anything bad about using one of these devices? It was only $20. It's called a "Hot Box."

Doing what you did shorted the output transformer to ground. Fortunately, that is better than an open circuit on the OT which could have resulted in an expensive repair.

I call those volume boxes "a waste of money". If you want to reduce the loudness of the amp, get smoother control over the volume, and have a more "bluesy" sound, throw away the volume box and replace the 12AX7 in V1 with a 12AY7.

I'm not trying to get a bluesy sound. I just want a quieter amp. Sometimes I just want to practice quietly, and this amp is pretty loud. The little "Hot Box" is perfect for my needs so far. I ordered a book on tube amp design. It's called "All About Vacuum Tube Guitar Amplifiers" by Gerald Weber. So far I've read the first chapter. If I can make my amp quieter but still crystal clean, I hope to find out how with this book. It is very informative so far.

Then you should buy a smaller amp, along the lines of 5 watts (which can still be loud). At 40 watts, the BDRI will never be called a "quiet" amp. Weber's book will talk about tubes, less efficient speakers, and maybe attenuators as far as ways to "quiet" an amp. Unless you are interested in redesigning and rebuilding that amp (which I have done), there is really nothing much you can do.

I tried about every amp that came through our town for a couple of years and the BDRI was the only one that sounded as good as my 1948 Deluxe. (focusing mainly on the bell chimy clean tones) None of the smaller wattage amps would cut the mustard. For right now, I practiced all day with the Hot Box and my amp was at a tolerable volume and sounded fantastic. Granted, my ears aren't trained to be a total tone-junkie yet, but I'll get there. I really want to learn these tube amps backward and forward, inside and out. I have a 2 year electronics degree and 13 yrs experience with solid state to get me started with the lingo. Do you think that ordering a tube amp kit and building it myself after I read my book will be a good start? I have a DMM and a 20 megahertz scope to start with.

By the way, I am reading your thread about redoing your BDRI. I think I'm on the 3rd page. It is a good read.

I'm with Bill. The only way to really quiet an amp (and retain the tone) is to redesign it or buy a smaller amp. I love my Twin Reverb. But when you bring the volume back to "1" or lower so you can play at home, all the tone is sucked out of it. (A Princeton Reverb gives a nice imitation in the average living room.) The discontinued Champion 600 is quiet and can get dirty, and I presume the new Excelsior can do the same. (neither of these two amps have tone controls.)

I stand corrected. That is good news. Not a bad amp for Chinese. And they sound awesome when plugged into an external cab. (for a 5Watt amp.)

I knew the grill cloth was the first thing you changed. A lot of folks put the oxblood cloth on theirs. Mine is still stock. The speaker has sweetened up a bit.
