Just got the amp this past week. I have a Jackson Dinky going into an RP255 modeler that goes to the amp. I noticed that on the overdrive channel, I get alot of hum.

I bypassed the RP255 and connected the guitar directly to the amp, and no change in the noise. I disconnected the guitar from the amp, and still got the noise.

The noise is best described as the sound you get from a TV that is not on a station, sort a SSHHH sound (not a hum). It gets really loud when I turn up the gain.

I've seen several posts where people have said that they don't like the overdrive - is this the reason? Do I have a defective amp?

Thanks in advance. :?:

And I'll bet you have the master volume on the OD channel turned up all the way too.

Fact of life: Overdrive channels are high gain channels. High gain channels have more hiss and noise than the normal or clean channels.

Actually, I didn't, though it certainly makes it worse with higher volume. I take it from your response that this is normal for this amp. I need to decide whether this needs to be brought back.

Yes, it is normal. That is what I said.

Yes that's normal. There is more gain on the drive channel and it will amplify the hiss.

A good quality guitar cable might help. Something with 90% shielding in it.

Like Bluesky said, having both the volume and the gain up all the way, will make that annoying hum. Try putting your gain at a reasonable level like at around 6-7 and also, do what I did which is to change out the stock speaker. I replaced mine with a Eminence Rajun Cajun which cost me $70.00 but was definately worth the investment. Installing that, has made the sound of the amp much cleaner and also more louder as well. I use a ESP LTD Viper 100-FM which has 2 Humbuckers and I play a mix of Classic Rock & some 80's Metal and since I installed the new speaker, I don't get any hum at all.

I've seen many people changing over the speaker to the Rajun Cagun. I'm a newbie, having been playing for about a year now, mostly rock and some blues. The amp I had before was a Vox 5-watt crate. This amp is sooo much better for me. I may change the speaker at some point in the future - it's interesting to see that the speaker changeover got rid of your overdrive hum.

I was playing yesterday on the overdrive setting with gain at 3 and volume at 3 and didn't notice any hum at all. I guess the whole reason I brought this up in the first place was to determine if the amp was faulty, but it's not.

Thanks for your response.
