Hi there,
I've been looking for a new valve amp, and I'm really liking the clean tones of the Fender valve amps - like the blues deluxe and hot rod deluxe. However, I play a lot after everyone else goes to bed and before they wake up - a headphone jack for an amp is essential for me. However, very few valce amps have headphones jacks - does anybody know of a relatively easy or cheap of adapting a valve amp so that the speaker is silenced and headphones can be used?
Thanks so much for your help,
Jordy
EDIT: I have a solid state Marshall at the moment that does have a headphone jack, but I'm looking for a little more tonally, and I'm wondering what can be done to compromise.

If you have a smartphone, you might look into some of the apps and adapters. Not a tube amp, but some of them sound good and its probably the cheapest thing to do.

Other than that I am not sure. Probably some kind of power soak or hot plate kind of deal- Something has to absorb the power going into the speaker if the speaker is being disconnected.

Something like this should work for up to a 40 watt amp:

https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/hpa50.htm

Note that it is designed for an 8 ohm output impedance from the amp.

Nice...but a bit pricey. I was thinking about the same thing because my wife and kids don't appreciate my crappy playing, especially at full volume.

If it doesn't have a power tube in the circuit...I'm not that interested

Yeah, it looks good but costs a fair bit (maybe that's unavoidable?) Does anyone know how it works, do you have to dissect the amp and wire it in or anything?

Perhaps you could check out the Blackstar HT-1.. valve amp with headphone capabilities. Relatively inexpensive, versatile and great reviews. I could only imagine its sound might lose some authenticity when played through headphones.. but still not bad for just practice.

It contains a dummy load to allow you to disconnect the speaker from the amp. The cable that normally runs from the amp output to the speaker plugs in to the back of the box, then another cable runs from the back of the box to the speaker. You may have to modify the speaker cables.

Here's a schemo for 300-ohm or 470-ohm impedance rated headphones with volume control. I suppose you could use a 300-ohm resistor with pot for a 300-ohm rated headphone. I'd use a 25-watt 8 to 10-ohm resistor for bigger amps (or whatever the output impedance of the amp is rated for). And a good 2-watt resistor for the impedance load (300 or 470-ohm).
