What color output tubes are required for a stock 60w super sonic. I have a stock anniversary super sonic with red GT 6L6 GC power tubes. I have a later super sonic which was produced approximately 4 years later and it has white GT 6L6 tubes. This amp sat around the store a while and I suspect the original tubes were stolen and replaced. I am wondering what the original tubes were for these amps so I can order a new matched set.

The people at the store do not know how to find out what power tubes are supposed to be in the amp, which I find unbelievable.

Sorry but same color don't mean it is exactly the same tube after so many years. If we admit same color is same tube this does'nt mean bias is right. It could drif after many years.

Chance are red color tube was the right one few years ago and now it is the white one.

Ask to the store a bias check and adjust if needed.

Odds are those are the stock tubes it came with. Music stores only replace tubes if they are damaged somehow. As for someone stealing them, I feel bad for the guy who did if that's the case. You couldn't pay me to steal a set of Groove Tubes. No offense to Fender on that, I realize they own Groove Tubes. But would ya pay extra for a car if I test drove and put a sticker on it?

It seems that most often, in most newer Fender amps, the White is standard. But, sometimes you will find Red and rarely even the Blue. You can use whichever you want, as the color rating is to allow you to get the breakup or headroom desired. "Blue 1 to 3" = earlier breakup, "White 4 to 7" = average, "Red 8 to 10" = most headroom.

The reason to use the same color rated tubes is so that, theoretically you won't have to check the bias when installing new tubes. As far as I know, GT still uses the same testing as always, so the old tubes should be the same as the new of the same color rating, but as stratele52 pointed out, it's not a certainty. And if the old tubes were Russian, and the new tubes are Chinese, they could sound different even if the same color rating. Usually the best that you can do is check your bias whenever you install new output tubes.

Getting GT tubes isn't simply a label, there is extensive testing and selecting, assurring that you get the best of that particular type. Yes, I would pay extra for Russian tubes that were preselected and thoroughly tested, as opposed to the same tubes straight off of the assembly line.
