Play your cards right and you might make enough in per diem to buy another guitar or two......

My wife did a TDY to Ft. Shafter (Hawaii) a couple of weeks ago and the four-day trip put about $465 in her pocket. Plus two days of travel comp time.

Today i replaced V1&V2 with the 5751.

Unbelievable. Great sound now i love the Drive channel.
Both channels sound like i wanted.
No need to change the speaker.

Thread resurrection!

First off, thank you Bluesky for this thread - this was not only an interesting read but had great info! Recently picked up a used BDRI and am loving it so far. Came with a Jensen C12K but I'm going to try an Emi Swamp Thang. Also, the previous user had a 12AT7 in V1 which made the clean volume sweep useable but really made the dirty channel thin / brittle.

My goal is to change pre-amp tubes to make the clean volume sweep more useable but also retain some of the crunch in the dirty channel (as I like both and use both channels) - also wouldn't mind a little less icepick in dirty channel).

I have ordered a 5751 and 12AY7 (both JJs). Wondering what the recommendations are for achieving the above-goal. Apologies if I missed something that would allude to this - I tried to pay close attention to all posts about preamp tubes. Of course I will experiment but thought I'd ask the experts first. It sounds like almost any other tube in V1 will help the clean volume sweep. I'm guessing the 5751 in V1 will allow me to retain as much of the gain while also warming the amp up and making clean volume useable.

Also, from what I understand V1 seems to have the most impact on tone, gain, and sweep - how do V2 and V3 come into play? Do they affect the same to a lesser degree?

Any info is appreciated. Thanks!

A 5751 in V1, 12AX7 in V2, 12AT7 in V3, would do this quite nicely. This is my preferred line up in my HRDlx, for a very sweet clean channel, and much nicer/smoother sounding drive channels. If you want even more cut in gain, change V2 to a 5751.

V1 has the most impact on tone, gain, and sweep, so a lower gain tube such as the 5751 will affect both channels. Half of V2 is used on both channels, and the other half is switched in only for the drive channel, so V2 will affect both channels, but to a lesser degree than V1. V3 is the phase inverter (PI), the main purpose is to drive the output tubes, and a lower gain tube such as a 12AT7 will keep the signal true, not introducing any clipping of its own, allowing V1 and V2 to determine the extent of clean and grit.

Thanks for the info! I've had the new pre-amp tubes for a couple of days - just have to find time to get them in there. I'll start with a 5751 in v1 and see where that gets me.

Also, I'm going to be switching the C12K back into the amp. The Swamp Thang added too much low end for my tastes. Hoping to trade the Swamp Thang for a Cannabis Rex to try that recommendation out.

I'll report back.

Wanted to throw an update out, in case anyone is interested. After trying several different pre-amp lineups, I'm mostly settled with the following:

V1: 5751
V2: 12ax7
V3: 12at7

I like this lineup but I do feel like I could use slightly more reduction in gain. The harshness on the drive has been tamed for my tastes (I think a lot of this had to do with the speaker swap). I'm going to order another 5751 and try that in V2.

Love the C12K after getting the preamp tubes set. I had tried the Swamp Thang but felt it added too much bass and treble. I will say, EQ had more sweep / range with the Swamp Thang but I had to be at extremes on the EQ before I liked the sound - I should say, I had tried the Swamp Thang based on the intheblues recommendation and he loves it so to each their own - The C12K seems like a great match and I have no desire to try anything else at this point.

I did also throw a passive volume control in the effects loop so the amp is more useable at home. Definitely helpful and would recommend for home use. I know most of this has already been hashed out here and elsewhere but thought I'd throw out my experience to date as I'm just discovering some of these swaps.

That's awesome Pick'n'Strum. Happy tone chasing.
